Product Description

Ten year old friends Alex and Sapphire discover something strange on the city bus map – a street that existed for only one year. As they set out to solve the mystery, they encounter the possibility of another world, another dimension perhaps, lurking in a vacant lot, but they are not the only ones on the trail. Who will discover the truth, and who will pay the price required by the witchcraft of positive thinking? (cover photo by gakuranman.com). Book One of the Dragon City Trilogy, followed by Freak City and Dragon Town.

The Book's Review of Itself:

The mysteries of childhood vanish with age and cannot be recovered whole, only partially at best. They hover at the edge of our field of vision, taunting us with their near invisibility. We play games with shadows. We fill in the blanks with false memories. If someone were to tell us the truth about those long lost events, we would refuse to believe them. We trust our own versions, and change them all the time.

Alex Kirkham is ten years old. Of all the things in the world, the things he likes best are buses. His bedroom walls are plastered with nine years worth of bus maps and his uncle Charlie was a bus driver until he disappeared two years ago.

One day Alex, his friend Sapphire and his younger brother Argus notice that one of the bus maps changes for one year only and shows a road called Snapdragon Alley that is not shown on any of the other maps. They of course decide to take the bus and investigate.

This is a really great little fantasy adventure story that I thoroughly enjoyed. The characters develop nicely and are strong willed, independent and determined to discover the secret they think exists at the end of the bus route.

Kindle presentation is very good with only a couple of errors that I could spot and very good formatting throughout. The book took me around an hour and a half to read. It is the first of a three part series being followed by Freak City, and Dragon Town.

Overall: 5 stars - I really enjoyed this book and am looking forward to reading the next part of the series.

Edit 27th May: My original wording of this review said that this book was aimed at younger readers and as a standalone book I would still say that, but having now also finished Freak City I would not say this as a series is suitable for younger children - Young Adult possibly, but be aware there is quite a lot of strong language in the second book.

WOW - what a book. I stayed up really late so I could finish this, I just couldn't put it down! (As soon as I'd finished it I downloaded other 2 in the trilogy!). The characters are all likeable and believable, the twists and turns are exciting and surprising - and I got really engrossed in the mystery! My only complaint (and it's a very tiny one!) is the ending. It just seemed a bit rushed - just a page or two of what happened to each of the characters......... all just a bit of an abrupt ending to a great story.

I can't wait to read the next 2.

Short and very good 4 Aug 2011

A very interesting read and well recommended.
It's a funny book in truth and totally different to what I would normally read. Although the story line is fairly basic, it does without the normal over expressed disasters, trials etc and manages to create interest in the 3 characters which are well discribed. Downloaded the second and third books already.

Enjoyable
I guess that enjoyable sums up the trilogy. I wasn't sure if the first book was aimed at children, but didn't think that the second and third were. Read more

Didn't like it
I would guess that this is aimed at a younger reader, I didn't really enjoy it. I haven't bought the rest of the trilogy.

A street in a different dimension
It is a nice enough concept, two children discover an alternate dimension just hiding between one street and the other. It is a childrens book, very easy and simple to read. Read more

This is a children's book
Unlike Philip Pullman's Dark Materials where the heroine is a child but it is not a story for children, this most definitely is a story for children. Read more

Not very interesting
I just didn't get on with this book. It is meant for children but it doesn't have much of a story & fizzled out at the end. Rather disappointing.
