this is the second snap circuit set that i have brought for my grandsons aged 3 & 5 and they love them although this set is a lot harder
for them they can plug there tab and watch all the different lights react to the music the only down side is the speaker which is not very good but apart from that would recommend to every one

Bought this a bit out of desparation as my 8yo had a very limited christmas list this year, but it's a fantastic toy and a surprise hit in our house. There are lots of components included which can be put together lots of ways and my son has enjoyed working through the project book - let's face it making projects that involve speed, flying and lights are probably going to be popular with most children. He's started making his own circuits too, which I guess shows some learning has taken place?

Fun educational toy 12 Sep 2012
By G. Walls - Published on Amazon.com
Durability:    Educational:    Fun:
I bought this kit for my 6 year old son. He absolutely loves it! All of the components are encapsulated in plastic cases with snaps on them. The kit also comes with a clear plastic assembly board that is labeled with row and column coordinates. The instruction manual contains diagrams of the finished projects. The items are clearly labeled and easy to follow. My son loves being able to put the projects together and see something cool happen. When I first bought the kit, one of the components( the color changing LED) was not working. I called Elenco and they very promptly sent me a replacement part. I am very pleased with that. The manual provides instructions for 182 projects so your child can be busy with this for a long time. I would recommend adult supervision at the beginning especially if your child is younger that the recommended age of 8 to make sure that they are safe around moving parts like the motor and the fan and to make sure that they don't create any short circuits which could damage the parts.
I am very pleased with this product and plan to buy more Snap Circuits kits in the future.

An amazing educational and fun experience with some cautions about how to use it most effectively 18 Nov 2013

I give it 5 stars with a heads-up on how to use it, realizing it's not perfect. So maybe 4 and a half..

This is a wonderful product. I first tried a couple of experiments with my 6 year old son - making the flying saucer fly, and the lights change with your voice. He was fascinated and wowed and loved it and wanted to play with it over his tablet and video games, which is really saying something!!

I next used it with an 8 year old who I am tutoring in general science. He also loved it instantly and wanted to play with it non-stop! And I want to play with it too!! It is a great idea, and fun to build experiments and play with.

It is a really great interactive, fun, educational and learning device masquerading as a fun toy. What's better than that??

My cautions- while the 8 year old did build circuits on his own, I returned the following week to find batteries reversed and circuits not working. I could not leave my 6 year old son alone with it, for fear he would damage the components.

So there is a minimum age child for whom should not play with it alone. And some experiments don't work or don't work well. I tried the dripping faucet strobe and that didn't work, same with a few others. But even then, it went towards being educational as I spun it as that is what happens with science and scientists- experiments don't always work, things don't always go as planned, go on to the next experiment as a true scientist. And that seemed to inspire the 8 year old and appealed to him.

As for those who say it doesn't really teach electricity or electronics, that is largely up to the parent or adult who is working with the child. I explained about current flow and electrons needing a closed circuit vs open circuit (and later about different types of energy like electrical and light energy and how they can be interconverted, as in the experiments using LEDs and phototransistors.)

The 8 year old asked after a week playing with it why there were different numbers for different resistors, which proved a perfect springboard to explain current and resistance using an LED and the different resistors affecting the brightness of the LED - which I'm sure is an experiment (or a few...)

Yes, many experiments are a variation on a theme.. so don't expect 175 unique experiments (or whatever they advertise) but there are enough experiments to go through. Best results will be if you take a few minutes to try experiments out before you do them with your child so as to weed out the weaker ones from the gee-whiz wow ones..

Soo- if you have a curious kid and if you are prepared to do a little explaining and not just hand it over to your child and walk away, this is an amazing kit that I wish I had as a kid!!

Our grandsons loved them. 16 Jan 2013

We gave these to 2 of our grandsons, ages 13 and 15, as Christmas gifts. They both spent hours working on them together. They were just what I was looking for--something fun and educational. And they are good quality.

Winning birthday present 10 Dec 2012

I almost did not order this because the discription stated it was for 8 year olds to 15 year olds. I was buying it for my grandson's 15th birthday and I wanted him to be challenged. Because of his love of music and technology I went ahead and ordered it. To my surpise the box stated it being for 8 to 108 year olds. I thought, okay, maybe this will be a challenge. He just loved it, so that made me happy with purchasing it. Please make that correction in your online discription.

Thanks,
Donna

AWESOME FUN!!! 29 Mar 2013

I have a 6 year old niece and a 5 year old nephew. I babysit for them a couple of times a week and I'm always looking for fun things to do together. I'm also a returning adult college student and my physics teacher had us put together some snap kits in class. I had so much fun and I knew they would too. I looked here on Amazon and not only found the kits but this Light one and let me tell you...I'm the coolest aunt that ever lived. We have had so much fun and we have only made four of the 176 projects. We packed into the bathroom with no window (for maximum light show viewing) and we went outside and flew our saucers all over the yard. They had so much fun and enjoyed every project and couldn't wait to try another one. I've found a perfect alternative to the electronic gadgets that normally entertain them! THANK YOU ELENCO ELECTRONICS AND AMAZON!!
