I was after a sturdy case made from EVA-plastic which is quite tough and a soft interior that could protect the Vita and still have a little room for cables etc. I didn't want anything exotic or clearly aimed for kids which would look silly when I pull it out of my bag on business trips, just a simple black conservative case that would do the job. I looked at the Sony First Edition Vita case which was only available in the US and sure enough there were a range of equivalent options here in the UK. After checking all the choices at Amazon and other places I settled on this Snakebyte case even though I had to wait about a week before it would be available but it was definitely the right choice.
The simple black two-tone checkered exterior looks pretty good and as expected the hard EVA plastic can take knocks easily. Inside there is a soft material flap which can hold 6 games and I think the best option is to have the flap rest on top of the Vita so the screen has extra protection and there is no chance of it getting scratched by anything you might put into the pouch within the case. The pouch has the right sort of tension so putting the Vita charging cable in will hold it in place. Last point is the flap which holds the games has some velcro on the edge so it can become a stand to prop the Vita up for watching movies etc - an interesting touch clearly inspired by the Apple iPad case.
Definitely recommended to anyone looking for a decent practical case.

I bought this because it had great reviews and was simple and black. When it arrived I was pretty happy as the case looks great. However it absolutely stinks, I do not believe this is a smell that will ever go away. The smell is probably from the cheap plastic used to make it. I left my vita in it over night and now it stinks too.

Fun:
I wanted a case that would protect my Vita & hold my game cards but that wasn't too big or heavy.
As I currently watch videos on my iPod during train journeys & want to do the same with the Vita, I also wanted a case that would hold it at an appropriate viewing angle.
This case does all this.
The case has a nice textured coating covering the hard shells that zip together with a good quality zip.
There is no internal padding just a soft felt-like finish, but the fit is not too loose (5-6mm on the ends, 2-3mm top to bottom), although it will move about if you shake it. You should still be able to fit it in with a skin on it.
A flap folds down on top of the screen, the top side of which has elastic material stitched to it which provides 6 slots for game or memory cards.
The whole of the top half of the case is a mesh pocket which will easily hold your charging cable (why does this only work with the Vita charger?), a set of in-ear headphones, cleaning cloth, and other small items.
This flap folds along its centre and attaches by a small piece of velcro to the material in the botton of the case to provide a pyramid shaped support to lean the vita on to watch videos while still in the case, as can be seen in the main picture of the item.
However, unlike my iPod, the video does not invert if you turn the device upside down (it does for photos), so if you are using headphones (which plug into the bottom of the device), you have to balance the device on the headphone plug and the edge of the case. This is not ideal but is usable.
Overall I like the case very much. My only complaint is that it has a disgusting smell (hence only 4 stars). I can't actually stand it near me for long. The smell also seems to have been passed onto the vita itself. Hopefully it will wear off soon.
