5.0 out of 5 stars The best jazz-funk guitarist I have ever heard, 5 Oct 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Snake Rhythm Rock/Black Whip (Audio CD)
Boogaloo Joe Jones is one of the best of the late 60s-early 70s jazz-funk guitarists. He only released a few albums (he is purportedly either fixing gaming machines or is a preacher now), and recorded a mix of fast funky shuffles, slow blues, and instrumental covers of soul classics. Black Whip and Snake Rhythym Rock are two of the best albums of the 'fast funky' stuff. Superb backing musicians, and a cool style keeps this album rocking till the end

4.0 out of 5 stars Black Whip& Snake Rhythm Rock a must for any fan of jazz guitar!, 26 Dec 2009
By
This review is from: Snake Rhythm Rock/Black Whip (Audio CD)
I first came across Boogaloo Joe on the Luv 'n' Haight compilation Jazz Dance Classics volume 2,
And was instanly impressed!
I decided to look for more albums by him and came across this double compilation.
I was not disappointed!
Jones is very much at home with jazz that has a twist of funk, but also has very soulful blues edge too!(Big Bad Midnight roller)
He also has a softer, mellower side. Check out Maccoll's The first time I ever saw her face, it's sublime!

If you like 70's dance jazz that is not afraid of the blues, this is for you!Jazz Dance Classics, Vol. 2

2.0 out of 5 stars Tepid Boogaloo Joe, 20 Jan 2002
By Michael Strom - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Snake Rhythm Rock/Black Whip (Audio CD)
The way to go with Boogaloo Joe is to buy the Legends of Acid Jazz Vol. 1 compilation. That stuff is smokin'. This one has its moments, but is uniformly less fun than the Legends compilation. Some of the cover versions of then/formerly-popular songs are dangerously close to elevator music (especially "He's So Fine" & "My Love"). Also, a couple of the slow ones get way too slow for this kind of thing. "First Time Ever I Saw Your Face," a great (& slow) Roberta Flack song, seems interminable. Don't be fooled by the album & song titles, which look a whole lot cooler than it sounds.

5.0 out of 5 stars Groovy early '70s Soul Jazz at its most cookin'!, 12 Mar 2007
By Eddie Landsberg "My 10th year as a reviewer !... - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Snake Rhythm Rock/Black Whip (Audio CD)
Somewhere between "funky" era Grant Green and plain funky Melvin Sparks lyeth the great Boogaloo Joe Jones. Its the early 70's... admittedly the organ thing is dying out, but labels are still desperate to capture the "young" generation... hence along cometh Boogaloo... a funky Jazz guitarist who is the epitome of both "soul" and "Jazz" and a sound that has the crispness of the old funky Blue Note sound... with a bit of extra bite added in. (Both these sessions were originally released on the Prestige label.)

An under-rated funky and bluesy Jazz gi-tah session man, Boogaloo's trademark was an ability to surround himself with some of the best sidemen he could and letting them do the job they already knew how to do (he told me this himself!) - - In many ways it worked too well... Since he's not all over the place, pretentiously showing off how complex he could play, its all too easy to write him off... but then if you listen closely... very closey you realize the precision of his razor sharp slick, simple and sharp ability to swing, groove and preach the blues. Many of the licks are so quotable, you almost write them off because they all just fit in like piece of pie and sound so GOOD you tend to think, "Well duhhhhh... it was meant to be there..." but then you realize that that

As an added bonus, he's "production savvy" - - if you don't believe me, notice the things that are easy not to notice but one day you know... for example, a strange whistle going off at the end of a soul, the subtle addition of a shaking tambourine, or even a simple coupla note Wes'ish strum that builds to the equivallent of a musical orgasm.

Some additional points - - the CDs include variety...from funky "protypical" acid Jazz rump shakers to ultra uptempo bluesy early George Bensonish swinging blues cookers - - and plenty in between... (There's even a Bossa Rocka - - my favorite is the Charles Earlandish rendition of the 60's pop hit "He's So Fine".)

Alas, the ensembles:
Rusty Bryant (sax) (and in an extremely funky mood!)
Butch Cornell - organ
Jimmy Lewis - bass
and Grady Tate Drums

Black whip features Dave Hubbard on sax,
Bobby Knowles (org.) plus Sonny Phillips, piano...
Bud Kelly - - drums
and Jimmy Johnson Percussion

Listen closely... some of the tunes might sound "status quo" at first, but they all build...especially the rhythm section which can heat up to unbearable temperatures, yet never overheats and loses it.

3.0 out of 5 stars More Boogaloo Joe Jones, 9 Sep 2004
By Ben Fernandez - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Snake Rhythm Rock/Black Whip (Audio CD)
If you have the Legends of Acid Jazz cd's and Mindbender / My Fire, and you want more Boogaloo Joe Jones, you shouldn't hesitate to buy this cd. I agree that the pop cover songs sound out of place, but I didn't find them all that bad to listen to. Most of the tunes are great, and well worth the price.
