No Cheese Chan 25 Aug 2000
By A Customer
Format:VHS Tape
I always thought Jackie Chan was an advocate of purely cheesy martial arts films, until I saw this. Non stop action of the finest variety from beginning to end. Worth buying for the intro titles alone where Jackie displays his skills to the full - hand to hand and using weapons. There's never more then 5 minutes between action scenes. Great stuff and one for any martial arts fans collection.

From experience, there seems to be only one company that produces quality martial arts DVDs, and Eastern Heroes isn't it.
As with Spiritual Kung Fu, they have taken the PAN & SCAN verson of the movie (which already loses about 40% of the image) and they've ZOOMED IN ON IT. So where people think they are getting the original widescreen version that was filmed, they are actually getting less picture information that there is on the 4:3 video version. This is an absolute disgrace, as much of the action now seems to happen off the edge of the screen. The picture quality is also stunningly poor in places.
What was one of Jackie Chan's finest early martial arts films has now been reduced to something laughable. And with the original dubbing track, which is truly awful, and no subtitles, it's hard to think how this DVD could be any worse.
Take my advice - only buy from Hong Kong Legends. At least they treat the source material with respect.

This isn't the best Jackie Chan film. It isn't his funniest, his most action packed, the one with the biggest stunts or with the best storyline, or even with the cutest love-interest (there really isn't one). The direction isn't amazing, the plot is sufficient though hardly outstanding.

However, this film does perhaps best show off Jackie's amazing skills in the martial arts with both weapons and bare fists, showcasing a variety of styles before he uses the "Snake and Crane" style to defeat the big bad guy at the end.
