I had these books about 30 years ago when they were first published. I loved them. Now I have a son I bought them for him. The books are still the same great illustrations and storeys but with one difference. The books themselves are much smaller than the original versions and the text is so small it can only be read in very good light and close up with 20-20 vision...unless you have a good magnifying glass! The Smurfs are not in this storey much but this is still my son's favourite Smurf book.

I have fond memories of the animated THE SMURFS AND THE MAGIC FLUTE movie from my childhood. Of course at the time I had no idea it was an adaptation of a story that began as a comic! This is book 2 of Papercutz Smurfs reprint series but it presents the story that introduced the Smurfs to the world. I would've devoured these books as a kid but I'm certainly enjoying them as an adult! The best scene in the comic is the same as the one I remember from the movie: Peewit attempting to speak Smurf!

The Smurfs and the Magic Flute is the full-color graphic novel presentation of the very first Smurfs story, as written and illustrated by the Smurfs' creator Peyo. Set in the Middle Ages, The Smurfs and the Magic Flute follows two young human friends, the noble Johan and the more diminutive yet energetic Peewit, who become embroiled in the search to retrieve a stolen magic flute before its power can spread suffering. Halfway through the story, the two friends encounter the mysterious village of little blue, bob-tailed men in white hats and pants, who call themselves Smurfs! Adult readers as well as children and teens will enjoy this classic tale that sparked an internationally beloved franchise. The Smurfs and the Magic Flute is highly recommended for public library collections as well as for anyone curious about the debut of the iconic Smurfs.

In the 1980's, the Smurfs were one of the most popular cartoons. Blue in color, their physical form is very similar to the dwarfs in "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs." This book is a cartoon story starring the Smurfs and a new movie will be coming out soon. The time setting is the Middle Ages, the location is a kingdom and two of the main characters are humans Johan and Peewit. Johan is a warrior and Peewit is a small "musician" whose play is to be dreaded. An itinerant merchant leaves a magic flute of Smurf origin in the kingdom and an evil man steals the flute. Johan and Peewit then embark on a quest to recover the flute and their journey leads them to the land of the Smurfs. The Smurfs are of course lovable creatures that only wish good to happen to everyone. They are capable of executing magic and speak in a very context sensitive language, which requires a great deal of interpretation by the reader. This necessity of thought makes the book a good item for children in late elementary school and beyond. Younger children will not be able to mentally make the connections between the dialog and the situation depicted in the images. Improving their ability to read should be a constant goal of children, which requires challenging material that will stretch their minds. One of the best ways this can be done is to have to apply an appropriate context to situations, which is what must be done if this book is to be completely comprehended.
