'Russell's writing is admirably vivid and concise ... cliff-hanging action embedded in historical events' -- Books for Keeps'Original and hugely satisfying both fictionally and historically' -- Jan Mark, Guardian

Product Description

Smuggling is a dangerous game, but Reuben has no choice. Being on the wrong side of the law is the only way to bring in the money his family desperately needs. The smugglers are safe as long as they stick together - but someone has betrayed them, someone they know. And to Reuben's fear and horror, he's caught up in a new and even more dangerous game of murder, lies and treason. Dark and dangerous, this is a really compelling and rip-roaring read.

5.0 out of 5 stars A gem, 7 Jun 2008

This review is from: Smugglers (Paperback)
Reuben and his family live in a little shack on the beach getting a meagre living from the sea. They are in constant danger from the tides and storms, from the soldiers and every time they climb the ciffs for birds' eggs. And there's an unsuspected danger behind them too. A wreck in the bay brings dangerous riches with it, and a friend for Reuben.

I think this is a really great story and very well written. It's easy to read, exciting, and has memorable characters and a really unusual setting. I warmly recommend it to boys of 9+ and to adults who like children's books.
