5.0 out of 5 stars Not My Favourite 9 Sep 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
'Talking about music is like dancing about architecture"......If you like Sakamoto's Japanese-tinged Neo Geo and Beauty, with it heir World rhythms, and Okinawan female vocals, then avoid this album as it has neither of these elements. That's all I'll say, nothing more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure briliance 6 Sep 2012
By Darius

Ryuichi Sakamoto made several popsier albums by the end of the last century. This one is the best. With a touch of jazz, moody melodies and tasteful vocal arrangements - that's how maestro of japanese piano music and composition see a perfect pop record. Smoochy is an ideal album for aquaintance with Sakamoto. Most of the other albums are too sophisticated to start with.

4.0 out of 5 stars Tasty 6 Sep 2002
Format:Audio CD
I first got interested in Ryuichi Sakamoto's solo projects after hearing his previous collaborations with artists as diverse as Aztec Camera and David Sylvian. When I bought this CD I had no idea what to expect. A taste test of Smoochy makes you come back for more. Whether the songs are written in japanese or spanish or English hardly matter. He can play jazz and pop and latin music and get away with it without being pretentious, this is great music! The only reason I'm giving it just four stars is because I haven't had the chance to listen to any of his other albums. If they get any better than this then they deserve my five.

5.0 out of 5 stars SUMPTUOUS! 3 Oct 1999
By Jacqui - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
This is by far the best pop work from Ryuichi...Smoochy has sounds that bring the idea of Neo Geo to beautiful fruition, more than just throwing the idea around as an artistic ploy without support. The soundscapes traverse both hemispheres, from the distant "paradise" to the more familiar park in your neighborhood. The main themes here aren't without human concern either. The pathos and inevitability of life cycles, cooling of warm hearts, the seductive yet ultimately alienating mode of electronic communication...put simply I haven't been able to put away this disc for 2 months! Next to Smoochy you might like to try his 1989 Beauty, which is a lot more understated than the melodic Smoochy. Great vocal from Ryuichi as well.

4.0 out of 5 stars it's groovy, funky, and sometimes calming 29 April 1999
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
I first bought this CD as a present for a friend of mine in order to introduce music of Japanese musicians to her. And I listened to it before I gave it to her, then I realized that I have to buy another copy for me. Yes, I love this album. My favorite is #1 Bibo no Aozora, Tango, and Dennogiwa. You can find different kinds of sound in this album, from techono sound to a kind of classical taste.

5.0 out of 5 stars Smoochy lays down the groove 19 July 2002
By "cherrycordial" - Published on Amazon.com

Smoochy is one of my favorite albums. It's very laid-back and relaxing, without being boring. You'll probably find yourself swaying along with most of the songs on this CD... my favorite track is #1, Bibo no Aozora. It's a sexy album.

this is a really a great sound. I don't know enough about music technically to say why it sounds so great but it does. you want to sway to the music and enter a nice mellow space.

4.0 out of 5 stars Brazillian influences accent this sexy album 23 Nov 1998
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Being, a long time Ryuichi fan, I have not been a very avid fan of his works in pop, but this album is one exception. Smooth grooves, jazzy instrumentation and seductive vocals all contribute to this extremely sensuous album.
