Synopsis
In the world of work, there is only one place where seniority counts for nothing, where shoptalk is banned, and where the last bastions against fresh air gather to discuss the minutiae of their lives - the smoking room. Returning to the nicotine lovers' den, series two finds the team with issues of ambition (mainly unfulfilled, obviously) when they find a box of old photos of themselves dating back to 1987.

How different their dreams were then to the reality that has befallen them. But is it too late to do anything about it? Sharon is on the warpath when she finds someone has broken in and scrawled 'TWATS' on the wall. When Sally is offered a new job she is in two minds - until Gordon urges her to think of her career (like he has) and then promptly has a heart attack. And, a 'no smoking' seminar goes badly awry when Lilian takes a shine to the facilitator - a man dressed as a giant cigarette...

If you enjoyed series one then you will enjoy series two. Len is still swearing, Robin still has a crush on Ben and Heidi is still boring. The scene is still the same and I am so glad to have another glimpse into their lives. The second series has a bit more of Sharon, head office have forced her to organise a "quit smoking" day and have sent her some "Diversity" policies that seem a struggle for her to implement; and you'll never guess who loves her.

Robin is as ever the comfortable constant presence in every episode; yet as all the characters are so well developed and played it would be very difficult to pick a star amongst so many wonderfully polished perfomances.

Buy this - you will not be disappointed.

Excellent! Smoking as it should be. A brilliant 1 set comedy fest. Some of the best characters to appear (and not appear Ben from the post room, Alky Malky and others) on the BBC in a long while. Excellent script. Watched entire DVD in one evening as I couldn't bring myself to turn it off. A tired work day followed but well worth it.
5 Stars isn't enough.

The first series of the smoking room incorporated good scripts with top-notch comedy performances from stars such as Robert Webb and Paula Willcox, however the second series doesn't quite live up to the promise of the first. It's the same scenario, a static sitcom set in the smoking room of a suburban London-based company where there's an unwritten rule of 'no shop talk' which inevitably means that the conversations take a rather bizarre route at times.

Many of the characters are given more depth in this series which is a good and a bad thing, but the last episode seemed rather flat in my opinion. There are some laugh out loud moments though - Heidi is usually the bearer of these and Emma Kennedy's deadpan delivery really makes the part come alive. The storyline concerning Robin's sexuality seems rather clumsily written, but the actors are able to make it believable. Overall it's a funny sitcom but it seems rather dated after a short space of time - maybe they should have timed the last episode to coincide with the eve of the smoking ban?
