4.0 out of 5 stars You ain't gonna weep and moan 2 Jun 2011
Format:Audio CD
Before I bought this album I read a couple of reviews in the English broadsheet press and both of them commented on the sound of this record. "Sounds like it was made in a pub" they said. Well yes, of course it does, that's the very point. They deliberately use old fashioned instruments and old fashioned recording equipment and techniques in order to achieve an authentic sound that matches their style. Why don't these reviewers get that? Any fan of K,D & L will know what to expect and certainly won't be disappointed by this collection of original material from the Durham family despite, or perhaps because of, its lack of 21st century digital clarity.

What we have here is a collection of swing, ska, blues and rockabilly tunes that will have your toes tapping and your voice singing along in no time at all. Two of the 13 tracks, the title track and "What Quid?" (which is, delightfully, the basic riff from Marc Bolan's "Jeepster") are instrumentals. On the rest the siblings share vocal duties and a fine job they do of it. Writing duties are by everyone, in various combinations, including mum and dad who also play, and Eddie "Tan Tan" Thornton and the legendary Rico Rodriguez provide horns here and there. This is altogether a very satisfying, smile-inducing package and one that I know is going to get years of play from me. Nice one K,D & L!

4.0 out of 5 stars Heard it on the radio, had to have it 10 Sep 2011
Format:MP3 Download
I heard Kitty, Daisy and Lewis interviewed on Richard Bacon's show. Then they played and I almost immediately looked them up on Amazon and downloaded the mp3s. Quirky, great musicians on a weird selection of instruments, strong voices, catchy tunes.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Von Trapp Family in Cool 18 Aug 2011
By Secret Spi TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
What a great album - brother, sisters, Mum, Dad and a couple of horn legend pals drum up a brilliant mix n' mash of rockabilly, R&B, ska and numerous other musical styles from the mid-20th century. There's a lot of energy and invention here with a healthy disregard for what's meant to be "in" this month. The fifth star fell off due to a couple of long instrumentals which are probably great live but sounded like an extended jam session here. But the rest is heaven pure, smokey or not!

Great CD, going to see them live soon although the one bad track is 'What Quid?' pointless monotony, but otherwise great album!

5.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic release. 8 Jun 2011
By Mitch
Format:Audio CD
An immensely enjoyable and consistent follow up to their self titled debut. 'Smoking in Heaven' is a stylish affair which suprisingly displays considerable depth for the barely legal trio . Stand out track 'Messing with my life' is an obvious crossover single for the band yet it still manages to remain intriguing through its unique blend elements Soul, Rnb and Rock and Roll. It's moments like this stress the importance of a band like Kitty, Daisy & Lewis. Despite its roots being firmly in 1950's it almost sounds fresh due to today's oversaturation of anologues and autotune. It's a band that almost once could have been dissmised as a novely but 'Smoking in Heaven' reassures the neysayers. More then just a revitalist band, KDL have managed to take an otherwise dated sound and create something bold and fresh. Highly recommonded.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent band 17 April 2012

This is the second cd, and it is just as good as the first one. If you like authentic, old style sound, then this is a great adition to any collection, although it's not strictly Rockabilly, but more of a mix of different styles. The sound is realy authentic and sounds very crisp and clear. Highly recommended.
