You ain't gonna weep and moan,
This review is from: Smoking In Heaven (Audio CD)
Before I bought this album I read a couple of reviews in the English broadsheet press and both of them commented on the sound of this record. "Sounds like it was made in a pub" they said. Well yes, of course it does, that's the very point. They deliberately use old fashioned instruments and old fashioned recording equipment and techniques in order to achieve an authentic sound that matches their style. Why don't these reviewers get that? Any fan of K,D & L will know what to expect and certainly won't be disappointed by this collection of original material from the Durham family despite, or perhaps because of, its lack of 21st century digital clarity. What we have here is a collection of swing, ska, blues and rockabilly tunes that will have your toes tapping and your voice singing along in no time at all. Two of the 13 tracks, the title track and "What Quid?" (which is, delightfully, the basic riff from Marc Bolan's "Jeepster") are instrumentals. On the rest the siblings share vocal duties and a fine job they do of it. Writing duties are by everyone, in various combinations, including mum and dad who also play, and Eddie "Tan Tan" Thornton and the legendary Rico Rodriguez provide horns here and there. This is altogether a very satisfying, smile-inducing package and one that I know is going to get years of play from me. Nice one K,D & L!

I heard Kitty, Daisy and Lewis interviewed on Richard Bacon's show. Then they played and I almost immediately looked them up on Amazon and downloaded the mp3s. Quirky, great musicians on a weird selection of instruments, strong voices, catchy tunes.
