5.0 out of 5 stars Journey to Our Inner World 14 Mar 2012
By critical reader - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
One of the reasons I read is to be challenged to see possibilities not previously considered. The most intriguing possibilities are those associated with human beings and how we relate. The characters in this novel seem to touch each other very lightly and very briefly. But then the reader becomes aware of the subtle complex relationships linking them together and is prodded to to consider the universal concepts defining and redefining them.

I appreciate the fine story-telling in the book, but I have re-read it because I wanted to get to know the people. Ms. Johnson has introduced me to new friends that I will visit often.
4.0 out of 5 stars Short, Deceptively Simple, and Sweet 13 Mar 2012

It is in the city-state of Leiodare that our story takes place. Anna armour is an inhabitant of Leiodare who, one night, is able to create life out of her own work of art. This feat will cause the city-state to undergo large-scale change. Smoketown is a multiple POV story, which is a key to advancing its plot. There are three POV to be exact, including Anna, the other two are effected by her action that one night. Smoketown is sparse on descriptions of people and places. The prose is neither grandiose or metaphor heavy -- it's direct and deceptively simple. A romance is integrated into the storyline and barriers crumble -- some were self-imposed. The city and the hearts, minds, souls of its residents are transformed . . . some are also redeemed.
5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent world-building and a deep, emotional read 20 Oct 2011
By Janice Sims - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This futuristic novel with supernatural undertones reminded me of two of my favorite sci-fi movies: Bladerunner and Strange Days. The tone was dark. There had been a plague and it wasn't clear what had caused it, some thought it might have been caused by diseased birds hence birds were outlawed in the city. At any rate a large part of the population died. Anna Amour, the main character, also experienced loss. When the story opens she is in the city waiting for another woman named Peru to return. The mystery behind Peru is key in finding out who Anna truly is, and what she truly is. The prose is sharp and concise, not a wasted word, which I liked. This writer has talent, and I look forward to her future work.
