Book Description

Banished to Victorian London

“Auburdeen Perneila Hayle,” Sassafras hissed, the amber glow from his cat eyes growing until the front of the wicker cage shone with it, “you will do whatever you can to behave yourself, to not embarrass me or your mother and to absolutely under every circumstance maintain a firm hand on your horrid temper.”

My anger simmered. Yes, I had a temper. And yes, it had taken me into situations in the past that perhaps I shouldn't have been part of, situations that usually devolved into fistfights and incoherent yelling at the offender. He should be grateful I always kept control of myself enough my magic never came into play. Except that one time. But it wasn't my fault. Not really. And the offender recovered. Eventually.

Auburdeen Hayle is the sixteen-year-old daughter of the next leader of her coven. When the transition of power becomes tense, Burdie is sent from her home in America to stay with old friends in London to keep her safe. But a handsome young man chooses to hide from the police in her hansom, drawing Burdie into an underground world of magic that challenges even her sense of adventure and puts her at odds with the very people who are meant to protect her.

If you love Smoke and Magic, don't forget to check out the Hayle Coven series--and the adventures of Auburdeen's great great great granddaughter, Sydlynn, in Book One: Family Magic http://tinyurl.com/7wkoswt

About me, huh? Well, my official bio reads like this: Patti Larsen is an award-winning middle grade and young adult author with a passion for the paranormal. But that sounds so freaking formal, doesn't it? I'm a storyteller who hears teenager's voices so loud I have to write them down. I love the idea of sports even though sports hate me. I've dabbled in everything from improv theater to film making and writing TV shows, singing in an all girl band to running my own hair salon.

But always, always, writing books calls me home.

I've had my sights set on world literary domination for a while now. Which means getting my books out there, to you, my darling readers. It's the coolest thing ever, this job of mine, being able to tell stories I love, only to see them all shiny and happy in your hands... thank you for reading.

As for the rest of it, I'm short (permanent), slightly round (changeable) and blonde (for ever and ever). I love to talk one on one about the deepest topics and can't seem to stop seeing the big picture. I happily live on Prince Edward Island, Canada, home to Anne of Green Gables and the most beautiful red beaches in the world, with my very patient husband and five massive cats.

Set in Victorian London Smoke and Magic follows Auberdeen Hayle, an ancestor of Sydlyn Hayle, and a powerful young witch in her own right.

Auberdeen has been sent to stay with a good friend of her mother’s whilst the family coven undergoes a tricky take over.

Auberdeen is under strict instructions to stay out of trouble and to comply with her hosts wishes. Even if that does mean wearing the worlds most uncomfortable dresses, mingling in a strange society, or not even being able to use her magic in the house.
I received this as part of the Purely Paranormal Package.

But despite Auberdeen’s best efforts her vivacious nature and thirst for adventure get her entangled in the plight of a complete stranger.

The plight, it turns out, is linked closer to home and as she travels deeper into this new world her mother’s best friend and family begins baying for Auberdeen’s blood.

Patti yet again had me routing for this strong female character as she rebelled against societies expectations, and her mother’s own wishes, to stay true to herself and to fight the good cause.

This story ended on a cliffhanger that left me wanting to reach for the next book immediately.

I always like a strong female character and this book is filled with 'attitude'. A well written tale, with realistic characters and a great setting. I will not give spoilers but will say that this story is worth a look.

5.0 out of 5 stars Magic, Adventure, Romance and More! Another incredible series by Parri Larsen! 9 Feb. 2012
By Timiosanthos - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
Auburdeen Hayle (Burdie) is a precocious 16-year-old who resents being sent to London while her family's coven undergoes a shift in power. Being the daughter of the next leader of her coven, she must be protected, but her adventures in London may not offer the protection her family had in mind.

When Burdie shelters a handsome young man from the police, she is drawn into an underground world of magic and danger. Can she trust the family her mother vowed would protect her?

This is the first in a new series by one of my favorite authors ever! If you are a fan of Patti Larsen's Family Magic series (Hayle Coven Novels), you will LOVE this. It's sort of steam punk historical YA fantasy, but all the history is subtle, making it more about the characters. It's authentic without being loaded down with facts. It's also the very start of the Hayle Coven! In this series, you get to see Sydlynn Hayle's (from Family Magic) family history as her ancestors first secure their place as coven leaders. I love this!

But you don't have to know the other series to enjoy this one at all. Each stand alone, with strong female characters, magic, romance, adventure and so much more. Patti Larsen is a master story teller with a keen sense of character development and language. This is a MUST read for those who love YA fantasy and paranormal!

4.0 out of 5 stars Full of Magic and Intrigue 28 Mar. 2012
By Amazon Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
When magic flies... I hide. That's always been my motto! Auburdeen ( Burdie) Hayle, it seems, has never shared my opinion. Burdie leaves her home in the states to live with family friends in London, for her own protection of course. While in London Burdie feels very alone and decidedly smothered by her overprotective caretaker. When she meets a mysterious boy who claims to want nothing to do with her, she is intrigued. Soon Burdie is caught up in his world and finds that the secrets she is unraveling are closer than she thinks.

When I am first introduced to Burdie, it becomes crystal clear almost instantly that she has a major attitude and a blazing temper. I almost get the impression that she WANTS to get into a fight with someone. She doesn't listen or follow directions particularly well, and when things get tough, she keeps everything bottled up. Her natural curiosity and fearlessness cause her to be in more than one scrap. By the end of Smoke and Magic, I really feel like I have a good grasp on her no-nonsense, opinionated character.

This book is FULL of magic. Burdie and her whole family are witches and so is the family she stays with in London. This adds many fantasy elements to the book and definitely helps keep my interest. Smoke and Magic features other unique types of magic, and I think Larsen does a great job of explaining and working them into the story. In addition to being full of magic, Smoke and Magic also features lots of plot twists and turns. Some are predictable, while others... I'm still surprised that they happened.

Some of the dialogue seems unnatural to me, but it isn't too distracting. I don't like how the book ends; it cuts of very abruptly, making me reel in shock. I'm reading along, find some really surprising twists, experience a few moments of "Oh no they DIDN'T", and then BAM. Story. Over. I guess the saving grace is that the next book is already out. But if it wasn't, I would be REALLY upset at the abrupt ending!

The Cover:

First: I LOVE blue. Second: This cover has lots of BEAUTIFUL shades of blue in it. Meaning: I REALLY like this cover. I like the misty white swirls at the bottom of the cover; they give off a mysterious feel. The glowing ball of power looks awesome and dangerous! I also really, really want to steal her top hat... just sayin'.

I give Smoke and Magic 4 out of 5 stars: Great Read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Can't wait for for the next one! 22 Mar. 2012
By Phaedra C Seabolt - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
I received this book as an ARC.

What an amazing story! I am actually wondering how to get my hands on the next one in the series to review now that I have finished the first one. I absolutely loved Auburdeen's character. She is a young and impulsive witch whose instincts are stronger than her own self-importance. She jumps into things without thinking of what it could mean for her and definitely attracts a lot of danger and excitement. What is funny is that apparently her mother was the same way at her age. Why is that funny? Well Burdie (as she likes to be called) is sent to stay with her mom's old best friend in London and really expects that she will learn a lot of dirt on what her mom did back then. She also expects to be able to have those same experiences since Georgina (her mom's best friend) was involved in all those activities as well. Her mom even sends a letter to George (as she tends to be called) telling her that she hopes their daughters can be friends like they used to be. You are led to believe that the two girls might get to have some real life experiences and come to realize how sheltered the London Coven's lives really are. George has instead taken on the attitude that what she did when she was younger is not anything appropriate for a 16 year old to do in this age. This means Burdie is confined and bored. As you can expect, a bored teenager goes looking for excitement and that is exactly what she finds. Her world comes crashing down around her. You are left wondering how Burdie will ever get her life back to normal or IF she ever will. It has an amazing cliffhanger. YOU WILL WANT MORE!

5.0 out of 5 stars Watch out Clockwork Angel! 25 Feb. 2012
By Morgan Mjmayze - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
I LOVE Patti Larsen's books! This first book in her newest series is fantastic, but it is also a prequel to "The Hayle Coven Novels". Each series can be read without the other, but I LOVED "The Hayle Coven Novels" and love seeing where the coven came from and how it all began with this new series. I especially enjoyed seeing the early days of Sassafrass, the snarky cat, and can't wait to find out more of his story :) Auburdeen Hayle, our heroine, is a force to be reckoned with and she's only 16!! All the characters are fascinating and endearing. The setting is captivating in early Victorian London. In the same vein as Cassie Clare's Clockwork Angel; if you're a fan you'll LOVE this too! Patti is a fabulous writer and never skips a beat, you feel like you are a part of the story. I can't wait for the next one and to find out more about Vasek and Jack! MUST READ!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating! 18 Feb. 2012

I admit I was a hesitant to read this because it is a prequel to the Family Magic series. But within a few pages I was totally engrossed and fascinated by Auberdeen's story. I loved the details of the setting in a time when England still used gas street lights and America was still the New World. Patti Larsen's characterizations and plots never fail to mesmerize me, and this book is no exception. I was drawn to Auberdeen and of course to Jack and now I'm eager to finish this series! Ms. Larsen, I am addicted to your books!
