Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Sometimes the best music takes a long time to mature; such is the case with Mark Mulcahy, as demonstrated on SmileSunset. Mulcahy began recording with the Miracle Legion in 1984, who were overlooked by many as mere REM copyists. Confirmation of Mulcahy's singular talent came when he broke away to release his debut solo album Fathering in 1998; Radiohead's Tom Yorke hailed his delirious dreamy vocals and critics invoked Jeff and Tim Buckley comparisons. SmileSunset demonstrates that Mulcahy's talent for tender intimacies and high-flown rapture is undimmed. His peerless vocals swoop and dive on "Alamo In Alabama" and unwrap the fragile regret of "I Shot Myself in the Foot". To deepen the mood of unabashed candour, "The Come On", the carnivalesque "Until I Say So" and "Quiet One" detail a world of bohemian intrigue and sexual adventure. Mulcahy's own multi-instrumental skills add many ornate musical splashes, insuring SmileSunset is delicate and provocative, warm and wonderful. --Gavin Martin

Mark Mulcahy's last release, the stark and emotionally harrowing 'Fathering' gathered a series of good reviews on its release two years ago. This release marks a move away from the austere qualities of its predecessor and a move towards a richer and more accessible sound by the former Miracle Legion vocalist. Often referred to as Thom Yorke's favourite singer Mulcahy is simply one of the best vocalists around, and one of the few who can honestly stand comparison with either Jeff Buckley or his dad. Strong songwriting is evident throughout this album, particularly on 'I Just Shot Myself In The Foot Again' and 'A Cup of Tea and your Insights' which is a lot more soulful than its title suggests. This release should be near the top of the wants lists of listeners who value a highly individualised songwriting talent combined with a fantastic vocal technique and deserves a wide audience.

Mark Mulcahy's solo debut Fathering was an extraordinary record. It was unfortunate that many reviewers paid it attention only because of Thom Yorke's recommendation. Miracle Legion were a much better outfit than simply R.E.M lite. It is a crime that such albums as 'Me & Mr.Ray' and 'Portrait of a Damaged Family' are rarer than Hen's teeth. Mark Mulcahy is one of the greatest vocalists of the last 20 years. That is no exaggeration, his voice is a sublimely versatile instrument, capable of reaching ecstatic falsetto highs as well as possessing the grit of a more melodic Tom Waits. I am a huge Jeff Buckley fan, and used to think that Jeff and his father possessed the two greatest male voices in popular music...that was until 'Fathering'. Make no mistake though Mulcahy is a great, GREAT songwriter;indeed the instrumentation on both his solo records is as good and worthy of me raving about it as he voice is. SMILESUNSET proves Mulcahy can get even better! It is simply an album of outstanding quality, breadth, and emotional resonance. This could not be described as singer- songwriter fare; It is too folky, too jazzy, too damn soulful to be called anything but genius. SMILESUNSET doesn't have a single weak link. I have my A-level coursework to do now so I haven't got time to talk about every track! Every song is a piece of art within the work of art, SMILESUNSET. The album is an amalgamation of genres, like Folk, Rock, Jazz, all underpined by the "realness" of the emotions, music and poetry, just like another great album; 'Grace' (by Jeff Buckley.) My personal Favourites are: I JUST SHOT MYSELF IN THE FOOT AGAIN (the single), ALAMO IN ALABAMA (amazing!!), THE WAY THAT SHE REALLY IS (a wonderful cinematic, widescreen ballad with a compelling, beautifully fragile vocal;the highlight of the album), RESOLUTION #1 (Here is an absolute classic, the instrumentation is supple and supports the smooth as silk falsetto vocal;stunning), I HATE TO NEEDY NEED YOU (great song, addictive), and finally a song that is perhaps the finest Mulcahy has written: A CUP OF TEA AND YOUR INSIGHTS (it opening instrumental passage is evocative of cosy nights in candle lit rooms, it has the untangible quality of being both sad and yet hopeful and life affirming. At the end of the song when he sings "I know I'll be alright" with the soul of Curtis Mayfield, the grit of Tom Waits, the emotive power of Mark Eitzel and the multi-octive acrobatics of Nusrat Ali Khan (and of course..J Buckley) you realise that Mark Mulcahy is unique. Treasure him.

too much irony has destroyed much of the music today. but mr mulcahy shows how irony, blessed with sincerity, a delicate combination to be sure, can create things of utmost beauty. Songs that live and grow to haunt. A truly stunning album.
