Product Description

Synopsis

In 1966, Brian Wilson, hot off the success of the ground-breaking Beach Boys album Pet Sounds, embarked on a project with his new songwriting partner, Van Dyke Parks, an album he said would be 'a musical story of America'. The writing and recording process for Smile, however, devolved into chaos. The unfinished project was shelved and Wilson fell victim to his increasing bouts of depression. As Wilson now prepares finally to release Smile to the public, Dominic Priore, dubbed by MOJO 'the world's foremost Smile-ologist', has written the definitive book on the entire experience - from the original recording to the revival tour and beyond. He has been in the studio with Wilson and Parks, as well as on the road for the celebrated European Smile concerts, and the result will be - at long last - the full version of one of pop's mythic stories.

2.0 out of 5 stars the junior encyclopaedia of smile 1 Sep 2005
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
as an introduction to the smile labrynth this works pretty well, giving decent historical context, laying out what smile would have meant had it been released in 1967. and it helps transfer this 22 year old to an age when revolution was in the air, musically speaking. you get the sense that the whole world was hinged on what a few young white men were doing in the recording studio. quite an alien thought now.
but to read this with any knowledge of smile beyond the liner notes of 2004's Brian Wilson presents Smile you will find nothing here but conjecture and a subjective reshuffling of the facts. i respect and understand priore's passion but his position as the pre-emanate "smile-ologist" is damaging. virtually nothing is said of the actual recording process, and there are no interviews with the session musicians or (god forbid) the surviving beach boys. a more measured approach is definitely called for, from someone who can resist taking pot-shots at those perennial easy targets mike love and "the beach boys inc." everybody knows mike love is an odious human being, we don't have to be repeatedly convinced of his stupidity on every page.
in short, it reads quite fluently, but it is nothing more than chewing gum literature, an extended fanzine article. it has clearly been rushed to capitalize on the current smile-fever and is, as one reviewer wrote, a huge wasted opportunity. the definitive book on smile is still waiting to be written.

4.0 out of 5 stars The SMiLE sent out returns atlast. 28 April 2005
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
This is a fine introduction to the mystery/myth of SMiLE,it certainly is not intended to be an anoraks bible, and as the previous reviewer states, you can find far more technical details in fan mags and web sites but if you are new to SMiLE there are more than enough stories/interviews/suppositions to whet the dryest palette,Dom has a child-like enthusiasm which leaps off every page, and whilst some of his theories are slightly left field and his biggest one, that being SMiLE was a two pronged attack, one Americana 'tother Elemental, was undone by the release of the recent album, his wonderful description of the era and the insightful interviews make up for any shortcomings/second guessing,Dom takes the reader through the entire rollercoaster ride that Brian rode back in 66,when for a fleeting moment,he,not John and Paul was the most important composer in the pop world,Brian's resurgence in the 90's,which led in time to both the Pet Sounds and Smile tours, and eventually to the release of "a" SMiLE album of sorts, what this book conveys are the reasons why the phrase "Brian is a Genius!" has been a staple cry since 66 with nary a whisper of anything remotely close to substantiate it,and also dispels the myth that Brian burned out during the original "SMiLE" era, this is a fantastic first step in understanding Brian Wilson and will make you want to replay Pet Sounds and SMiLE,which in truth is what any book should do,credit must go to Dom for telling such a tangled web of mystery in such lucid and reader friendly fashion,The Phantom Surfer.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very readable account about Wilson's classic 21 Aug 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Allegedly, Smile is being officially released later this year and it will be interesting to see how it differs in format to Wilson's solo version. This book provides very interesting background, and anecdotal evidence, behind the world's most eagerly awaited LP. It is very easy to read and I disagree with some of the reviews here - this is probably the most definitive book about Smile that we are likely to get, and the author's enthusiasm is infectious. Besides,it is also evident that Brian Wilson himself is never going to be able to fully enlighten his fans, given the fact that he went to live on planet Brian, soon after Smile was officially shelved.

If you want to be as well informed about the mythical Smile as you can be, this is definitely the book to get. Given the fact too that both Wilson and his co-writer, Parks, contribute and give their full support. I rest my case. Easily worth a four star rating; nice one!
