I put this CD aside for a week after I'd bought it and now that I've listened to it I can honestly say this is probably one of the best (if not the best) albums I've heard. Don't get me wrong though- I'm not saying that Smile Empty Soul are doing anything utterly original or that they're breaking new grounds. You'll probably find their sound and lyrics similar to bands like Three Days Grace but if the saying "it's not what you do, it's how you do it" goes, then SES has definitely shown us how it should be done. The guitar riffs are awesome and I especially like the use of strings in the beautifully wrought "This Is War" which happens to be one of the most interesting and thought-provoking tracks on the album - a song written from what I think is the perspective of a soldier. "Bottom of a Bottle", "Silhouettes", "Nowhere Kids" and "The Other Side" are also stunning tracks. This is in short a collection of songs that anyone can relate to, that make you think about life in general. Listening to Smile Empty Soul has made me come to a radical conclusion: if you can't appreciate this album, you can't appreciate good music.

This album puts its best foot forward in the first four songs from the thrilling opener to the acoustic lament of "This is War". Thereafter, the remaining tracks descend into a somewhat repetitive groove well worn by other bands such as Staind and Lifehouse. Matters are not helped by the rather adolescent lyrics and earnest vocal delievery. That said the production is crystal clear and the band play with real commitment. You will have heard all this music before elsewhere but the first four tracks make this CD a worthwhile purchase.

Since I got my hands on this album - which by the way wasn't easy - I really haven't listend to much else. It's a fantastic album and I can't wait for the follow up "Anxiety" due September. Only downside to the album is that it "Only" packs 14 tracks - cuz' once you get started you don't want it to stop. Somehow this band has been almost totally overlooked in Europe which is such a shame cuz' these guys rock! Deep and meaninful lyrics accompanied by raw grungy guitar riffs - this album is a diamond in the rough.

Smile Empty Soul ROCK!!
This is a truely amazing piece of art. i listen to a lot of music and on the strength of three of their songs, i decided to import this CD. i am soooo glad that i did!! Read more
