 'Absolutely Delightful'

(- Angels & Urchins )

'Smile! is an irresistible picture book...It's a bright, uplifting story about family life with fantastic illustrations - and sure to engage young children.'

(The Bookseller )

When her mom says no to more cookies, chipper little Sunny loses her smile and searches the whole house hoping to get it back. She peers under the bed, sifts through the couch and questions poor Glittergills the goldfish. Even with a small, down-turned mouth Sunny remains cute as a button, and her percolating narration bounces readers from page to page. Wonderfully imperfect hand-lettered sections of text help evoke the high-pitched voice of a small girl. Charming, Lauren Child–like multimedia spreads pop with punchy colors, quirky diagrams and annotations. Sunny might have churned out the illustrations herself, bent over a kitchen table determined to tell her story. Readers learn that in scouring her home, Sunny inadvertently does quite a bit of good work: She cleans up her room, feeds Glittergills, finds Daddy’s lost flip-flop and ends up quietly playing cards with Mr. Honeycomb, the family dog. Sunny’s mother beams, lavishes her with praise and...Found it! Hodgkinson’s vivid artwork and story capture the colorful, intricate and comedic inner workings of a child’s imagination. This is story telling for young children at its best ...I picked this book up at our local library and my daughter and i sat down to read it tonight .We were both laughing through the whole thing it is so comical.
It tells the story of a little girl who has been told off by her mum and shes not allowed any biscuits not even crumbs before bedtime ..and therefore this makes her lose her smile ...
She spends the whole day looking for her smile, without her knowing she manages to tidy her bedroom , feed her goldfish and play with her dog(Mr Honeycombe who is hillariously smart )
The story takes us on a brilliant journey.
This is definatly on our books to buy list ..highly recommended and the illustrations are fabulous too .Just brilliant.

This adorable story about Sunny's lost smile will give your little ones a case of the giggles! 29 Jan 2010
By D. Fowler - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
A wide eyed, freckle faced little girl named Sunny with pony tails stuck her head around a corner and looked at a cookie jar. Her mother said she couldn't have any cookies, not even "crumbs and little broken pieces" and she was not in a very happy mood. Not at all. In fact, she found that she was missing something and that missing something was a smile. Her smile was very important and Sunny just had to find it. She even started putting up posters offering "1 humbug" as a reward. Smiling was one of Sunny's "favorite hobbies." She could smile in any kind of weather and losing her smile was a crisis.

Her dad told her to try to remember where she "last saw it." Of course that was a silly statement. She looked under the bed. There was a ton of junk under there, but no smile. She decided to clean up her room in search of it because she was so "D-E-S-P-E-R-A-T-E!" She looked in Glittergill's fish tank. No smile there. She looked toward the twins to see if they took it. No smile there except for theirs. Sunny had the perfect smile and really needed to find it. She decided to keep on looking around the house. Would she ever find her special smile again?

This adorable story about Sunny's lost smile will give your little ones a case of the giggles. Every youngster, and adult for that matter, gets grumpy now and then and loses their special, unique smile. The simple artwork is very appealing and meshes well with this story. Wide eyed Sunny with her down turned smile will remind everyone of their occasionally moody youngsters. The little surprise twist at the end of the story is very cute and when you read this story to your little ones they will definitely be able to relate to it!
