This is the first outing for a rather odourous canine called Bill and has had our family giggling mercilessly for quite some time now. Beautifully written and illustrated by Daniel Postgate, son of national treasure, the late Oliver Postage, Bill will do anything to avoid water and any form of getting clean. The family despair until they go on an outing, leaving Bill with someone who has HIM despairing before long. The formidable Great Aunt Bleach is led a merry dance by the pongy pooch until she finally gets the upper hand. The text has a magical rhyming quality to it, making reading it out loud an absolute joy. Go to town with the voice of Great Aunt Bleach and you'll have your little ones, (and not so little in my case), captivated. Bill has since been on an adventure with his cheesy chums in Smelly Bill Stinks Again and we can't wait for his 3rd outing to be released imminently as he falls in love. I hope that dear old Smelly Bill can become as lovable for children today as Bagpuss and The Clangers were for those of my generation.
