Ok, a quick history lesson to explain why some tracks are missing.

Travel back in time to April 1968 when the music business was a very different beast from today. Back then artists used to release at least 2 albums a year plus various standalone singles in order to stay in the public eye. When the UK record company found out the that followup to Axis: Bold As Love (released in December 1967) was taking longer than expected they put out this compilation as a stopgap until Electric Ladyland (released in October 1968) was ready. At this time there wasn't any 'spare' stuff that was deemed in a finished enough state (unlike today's box set fillers) so the decision was made to compile both sides of Jimi's 4 singles and add on some stuff from Are you Experienced (Axis was deemed as being to recent to plunder).

Meanwhile over in the states, the US record company decided it was too early for a hits compilation and decided to wait until 1969 when again there seemed to be no sign of a new album on the horizon. This enabled them to include stuff from Electric Ladyland like 'Watchtower' and 'Crosstown Traffic'. As the US version of Are You Experienced didn't include 'Can You See Me', 'Remember' or 'Red House' they were finally released here but they didn't release the same version of Red House found on the UK Are You Experienced - the US had to wait until the 'Blues' cd in 1994 to get that.

Most Hendrix best ofs take this album's track listing as their starting point and rearrange/remove/replace some tracks at whim. I think at the moment it's the only place to get a remastered version of 'The Stars That Play With Laughing Sam's Dice' in it's original b-side mix (if you get one with the UK running order). It's hardly an essential tune though, and newbies would be better directed to either Are You Experienced or whatever the current best of Jimi is.

This was the first Hendrix album I bought (I built up an extensive collection over time)
It's as good a place as any to start your Hendrix journey.

Most (but not all) of the popular Hendrix songs are here:
Purple Haze
Hey Joe
Fire
Foxy Lady

To name 4 of the better known and liked Hendrix tracks; the songs you most associate with Jimi Hendrix and his period of popularity.

That's not a bad thing for new listeners, some of the more obscure albums and recordings of Jimi are quite subjective to taste.
There are a few lesser known songs that are worthy of attention, "Manic Depression" is a catchy song with some great vocals and quite a memorable tune (it's one of my personal favourites) "The Wind Cries Mary" a softer vocal piece that breaks up some of the more intense songs in the album.

"Stone Free" has some nice guitar work and is quite a high paced number
No need to mention Purple Haze and Hey Joe, probably the two best known Hendrix songs.

I can't really fault the album, the audio recording quality is typical Hendrix era (ie fairly basic and not the best) the rough edges can be seen by some fans as part of the sound. Not a complete collection of "smash hits" but the best place to start on a Jimi Hendrx discovery.

This is a great album though it does not have ALL the Hendrix hits. Missing from this line-up are tracks such as "All Along The Watchtower", "Crosstown Traffic" and my absolute favourite "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)". But an enjoyable album nonetheless.

Bought the book and downloaded the MP3 of the album. Makes an excellent combination at a reasonable price. Although it lacks a few of the classics it is still a great combination to get started with.

This CD, the original unremastered release from the 1980's, is a shameful exhibit. I hope all those decades ago Polydor put a refund policy in place for anyone who bought it and was unhappy with the completely botched mastering job.

The Wind Cries Mary, Stone Free and Laughing Sam's Dice all have the first few notes randomly chopped off their intros (and the latter sounds like it was taken from a damaged tape).

This title has since been reissued and remastered, with the latest version seeing the aforementioned tracks restored to their complete form - though as with all Experience Hendrix remasters, the disc is a bit on the loud side....but I'm not reviewing that version here...

So for the original 1980's CD issue (as Amazon does not permit zero ratings) I'll give 1 star out of 5, simply because the unforgivably incompetent mastering ruins the entire listening experience.
