The CDROM is for the computer (Windows 98 to Vista, and Mac) and the CDs are for the car. Have a good time learning Italian.
Remember that if you are a true beginner, you might want to start with our Introduction to Italian first, or simultaneously.

5.0 out of 5 stars Speak Italian in a Natural and Fluent Manner 1 Oct 2010
By Jane
I studied Italian over twenty years ago, and I recently decided to take up the language once again. I have tried various programs, such as Rosetta Stone, Michel Thomas, and Pimsleur. However, when I tried to have a conversation with native Italian speakers, I was always disappointed because a) When they spoke at a natural pace, other than picking out a word here and there, I could not understand what they were saying and b) While I could make myself understood, I was told that my sentences were too rigid.

As far as I know, Smart Italian is the only program available that teaches the student to speak in a natural and fluent manner. The program presents a series of vignettes in which an interviewer discusses a topic with everyday Italian speakers such as a diplomat, a chef, an art curator, a historian, an actress, etc. The conversations are presented in stages. The first stage, breaks down the sentences into bite sized segments in slow motion. The ensuing stages move progressively faster, until the sixth stage, when we hear the actual interview at normal speed. At first the conversations seemed impossibly fast, but after listening to them a few times, I began to understand more and more of what the speakers were saying.

The Smart Italian course has helped me tremendously in developing an ear for Italian as it is spoken by real people and in improving my accent. In my opinion, it is by far the best program available, and the best value for the money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome! 13 April 2010
Years ago I studied Spanish with a system similar to this one. It seems to be the only system that really works for me--and now it works for Italian also! I have tried the traditional approach--answer response, etc. reading all the phrases in the "basic conversations for tourists,,." This method teaches (1) how the language actually sounds when spoken by people other than language instructors; and (2) gives one a more acceptable accent and an instinctive understanding of what is going on. It's unnerving sometimes not to see everything printed out for verification, but my experience shows that this aural/oral method is probably the fastest way to get a real grasp of the language (at least for me!)--and of course, if you must, the translations are all there for those who wish. I'm extremely pleased to have discovered this fantastically workable system! Thanks!!
Note: You should start with SmartItalian, Introduction to Italian, volume 1 & 2 if you are new to Italian. You will make progress in no time.

I bought this after starting off with the Paul Noble Learn Italian, I wanted to start reading more Italian text and listening to Italian conversation. This is brilliant because the book is in Italian with the meanings of the key words down the side of the pages to make translation quicker than referring to a dictionary and then you can listen to the CD where random sections of the book are read and you can follow along to, so you can learn how to pronounce certain words you might not be too sure about.

The course instructor/narrator's voice reminds me strongly of Bruno Tonioli from Strictly, and his energy is somewhat infectious. Despite the course title, this works best as a supplementary rather than main method for intermediate learners. It's based around a number of interviews with a wide range of native Italian speakers. The instructor breaks the interview down, line by line, giving the learner hints on the pronunciation and usage of different terms and a chance to repeat them, gradually building up to each interview at full speed. As a supplementary method to other learning, I've found this helpful and enjoyable. I'll definitely give the French version a try when I come to reviewing my French skills next year.

5.0 out of 5 stars Learn Italian With Confidence! 17 May 2010
By Alan - Published on Amazon.com
Ive been using the SmartItalian products for some months now and am sure it is the best language course i have ever tried in book,cd or cdrom form.
I would recommend starting with the introduction cd's before tackling the beginner version. The introduction cd's need repeated listening ,usually this is where it all falls apart (i found repeated listening to Michael Thomas cd's extremely difficult due to his strange accent ,pompous manner and weird exchanges between his two students )i have listened to the smart italian cd's some 11 or 12 times and still find them quite fresh and easy to listen to .
Having worked on verbs, numbers and vocabulary from the introduction cd's i find i can express most of the things i want to say without a struggle. I am now working on the beginner conversations which are similarly fascinating (peopled by a diplomat,a chef,an actress and various other real italian people ,boring it is'nt ) the emphasis being on listening and speaking rather than reading.
So all in all a really great product which will teach you how to speak Italian the way real Italian people speak with the correct accents and vocabulary as it has been compiled using recorded conversations. Unique and practical, well done SmartItalian.

5.0 out of 5 stars Italian at Freeway Speed 23 Jan 2010
By Hastivibrax - Published on Amazon.com

Learning a foreign language can be like getting onto a freeway. Your first impression is speed -- Everyone speaks so fast! But with some determination, you manage to accelerate and join the traffic, concentrating hard to find your exit (where you can breathe again).
SmartItalian exists to help you get up to speed with real, spoken Italian. On the beginner Cd's, there are six recorded conversations. These are first studied with a narrator, who repeats them slowly and with explanations, before finally presenting the actual interview.
For me, this method works great. My comprehension of spoken Italian has increased a lot in a short time. It's much like learning a song from the radio. At first it's hard to figure out the words, but after a few listens, it becomes easy.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Way to Learn Italian 23 April 2011
By Dr. Jean K. - Published on Amazon.com
I have tried many Italian programmes in order to get a good grasp of Italian for beginners and to perhaps be able to speak it a little. Some are quite good but the truth is that in order to really get a good understanding and feel for the language you need to hear it being spoken, regularly, by Italian people.

This is the first language programme that I have ever purchased that enables you to listen to considerable extracts of real conversations and to learn the pronunciation, the flow of the language and the meaning of what is being said, at a reasonable and manageable pace.

Although the conversations are given using the real people interviewed one of the things I found essential on the CD's is that the teacher, Roberto, initially delivers these conversations (at the beginner and intermediate level, the advanced level is slightly different). You are first required to listen while he reads through the interview. On the following track he then repeats the conversation in short phrases and you are asked to repeat what is being said. On the following track you both repeat the phrases and read along while you are repeating and listening to him. (The English translation of all conversations are given in the accompanying booklet) As you progress, common grammatical constructions and Italian idioms and terminology are explained. I have to say I found this the most helpful and instructive method I have ever tried in getting to know the Italian language. The instructor's diction and clarity is excellent and I found I was able to master a lot of pronunciation that I had previously found difficult (if not impossible).

The inclusion of the conversations by the actual people interviewed is, of course, the other crucial element of these CD's. At first I found it very difficult to understand because some of the people interviewed speak incredibly fast but having gone through each of the steps with the instructor I understood far more of a "real time" conversation than I would have thought possible. A chef being interviewed (I think while actually cooking something) deserves a special mention. He wins the prize for fastest talker and I'd love to try what he is cooking!!

I will use these CD's regularly until I am able to master the conversations completely and this is the first time for me that going back and progressing a bit more with each repetition will not seem like a chore. The interviews are varied and interesting and I really feel that with practice I will be able to speak a little bit of this beautiful language and be able to understand a lot more Italian than I had thought I was capable of.

Note
I would recommend that anyone starting this programme should also purchase the SmartItalian Introduction to Italian CD's. They explain the conjugation and tenses of the most commonly used Italian verbs and also provide basic lessons regarding gender use and basic language construction (a lot of which you will then hear on the CD's).

5.0 out of 5 stars brilliant! 3 Nov 2010
By Steve Hesby - Published on Amazon.com
Smart Italian is wonderful product and concept. I enjoy the beautiful accent of the interviewer/narrator and find him to be very authentic. And all the people speak real, everyday Italian. It is so important that those of us interested in seriously understanding spoken Italian get the reality and not some glossed over version of the language. This is the first program, which does this.
