When I heard my first lesson I honestly felt betrayed by my other programs--why didn't they simply tell the truth about French pronunciation like Smart French does? --Patricia Jones, attorney

This is A MUST for learning how the French REALLY talk! I found this rather disappointing for the price and the sales blurb. The main fault was the associated text which was skimpy to say the least. The interview order on the disc did not follow the text page order and there was little explanatory notes apart from a translation. Idioms, colloquilisms, phrase construction, any "unusual" verb conjugations etc were not explained. You have to search to find out what the red ink in the text implies. Also you need to listen to the same interview over and over to get real benefit without using the text or translation. You are asked to repeat the words but there is no interactive facility on how well you did.
Perhaps it may have been better to start with the basic level version irrespective of your French ability but in my opinion you could do as well by listening to French radio or watching TV5 mondiale.

I found this very disappointing and poor value for money. It is repetitive, very limited, and inconsistent about baseline knowledge.

It mostly consists of a small number of texts which are repeated 5 times - for no good reason. Surely most CD players have the facility of repeating a track. There is no justification for repeating individual texts more than 3 times (slow version, slow version with time to repeat, and original fast version). So you are paying for pointless repetition and the author is wasting an opportunity.

The main point made is that French people don't pronounce all the syllables in a word when speaking, just as we say "can't" instead of "cannot". Over and over and over again. and over again. Did I mention it was repetitive? Sacre bleu, it's repetitive.

Despite a level of repetition that would annoy most kindergarten pupils and an introduction of how to count to 1,000 and how to pronounce French, there is virtually no explanation of vocabulary, grammar, and the ubiquitous slang which makes the transition from school French to the real thing so hard. I've heard other tapes which make a point of using a wide variety of native speakers to adapt the listener's ear, the few original interviews do not show much variation in accent or tone and don't adapt one's ear.

I have been studying the CDs for the past 2 weeks and I cannot believe the change in my listening and comprehension! My biggest frustration has always been the inability to separate the words and phrases in spoken French. Now, I can listen and discern TF1 news reports and interviews. On top of that, my speech has changed - my French has acquired a melody and tone to it that surprised even my French speaking friends. I spend 2 hrs a day listening and repeating; to the point that I can feel the muscles in my face being `trained' to move in a different way. No other French class had such results for me. The phonetics I was taught in college sound primitive and crude in comparison to the way I am learning to speak now. Bravo Smart French

Never before has it been so easy to learn French with a great accent and also to keep up with and understand French. It is all to do with learning how the French omit certain words and stress others and make liaisons in spoken French. Christian Aubert shows you immediately how easy it is because he brings it to your attention. The difference between written and spoken French is not taught in English Schools. We are taught accents, endings to leave off ...but this is major. Take this course and you not only learn to speak like the French but listening and understanding French becomes easy. Great product with lots of interesting, informative and often humorous interviews.

I love this program. I have used other audio courses in the past like Berlitz, Pimsleur, Living Language and Collins. While I learned a lot about the language structure, vocabulary, etc., the problem with those courses is that they do not give you the opportunity to listen to real French people speaking in a natural manner. I was recently in Paris and was able to catch only a few words from the locals because I was not used to hearing French as spoken in everyday situations by native speakers. The other courses use scripted conversations with the purpose to introduce a concept. I found myself "understanding" the dialogue basically because I could foresee where the story was going and by taking cues from the context rather than actually fully understanding the spoken words.

Another reviewer commented that you could do better with some of the other courses. Well, imagine if you were French and used one of those courses to learn English and a few months later turned yourself lose anywhere in the U.S. Good luck with that if you end up in the Southeast, the Northeast, or mighty Texas. You'll soon find out you are great grammatically, and yet a very poor communicator because you can't understand SmartFrench Audio CDs Intermediate/Advancedthe natives in their element. The same reviewer said that you would do as well with a French movie with subtitles. This may be a good idea in the long run, but only as long as you've been able to "fine tune" your ear to the language first, and this is precisely what this program does. For one thing, you get to hear the dialog being read to you, then you repeat it, then it is read again slowly as you optionally follow along reading the transcript from a booklet, and finally you hear it from a native speaker in a real conversational tone.
