Manufacturer's Description

Easy to use Hot Cafetiere

  • To warm your cafetiere, rinse with a little boiling water.
  • Spoon desired amount of freshly ground coffee into the pod and place into the cafetiere.
  • Add hot (not boiling) water, taking care not to overfill, and stir.
  • Replace the plunger in the raised position onto the cafetiere. Ensure the safety lid covers the spout opening so your coffee stays hot for longer.
  • Leave to stand/brew for approximately 4 minutes, depending on strength preference.
  • With one hand holding the cafetiere handle, slowly press the plunger down fully to allow it to engage with the pod. If too much resistance is encountered, pull the plunger back up a few centimetres before continuing to press.
  • Turn the lid to the open position, pour, serve and enjoy!

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice idea, does it's job, a bit over engineered, 19 Jun 2008

As Cafetieres go, there is nothing to complain about with the Smart Café. The top is rubberised, the handle is big and chunky. Which you need on something that holds 1.5 litres. It looks clean and utilitarian.

Coffee pours out well. An essential feature, but suprisingly one often found failing in pouring devices we've encountered.

It will keep your java warmer for longer than the traditional glass cafetiere.

It claims to have "smarts" to capture all the coffee grounds. This involes a little tray that slips into the bottom of the glass holder. You put your grinds into that, fill with water. The bottom of the plunger (which would typically have the mesh that pushes the coffee grinds to the bottom) also has a "lid" on it. The lid clicks into place on top of the tray when the plunger is pushed down.

The idea is that this traps the coffee grounds inside the little tray.

Oh so smart. Sadly, it doesn't work.

You still get coffee grinds in your cup - no more or less than any other Cafetiere we've tried.

When you come to empty it, you have to fight with the tray and it's lid, pulling them apart. The opportunity for comedy here is high. Sooner or later you are going to yank so hard to seperate the two that wet coffee grinds are going to fly around the room.

You now also have an extra part to wash. This little "smart" tray. Not to mention that coffee grinds get caught inbetween the mesh and the lid of the plunger, and can't easily be removed/cleaned.

Instead of all this clever "tray" stuff, a simple mesh filter through which all poured coffee must pass would, to our minds, work a lot better, be a lot simpler, and cost less to make. Less prone to breaking too.

(For any cafetiere designers out there - make this mesh filter removable please, dishwasher safe, and throw a couple into the package when you ship them to account for when they get lost).

This isn't a "themos" / vacuum sealed product. It's a regular glass jug, inside a "double walled" plastic holder. It does work - keeping your coffee warmer for considerably longer than a regular cafetiere. A couple of hours is probably the maximum you can hope for, and it won't be piping hot then, but hot and drinkable certainly.

The other massively annoying feature is that only the inner glass jug is dishwasher safe. The plunger and outer plastic holder are not.

Would we recommend it - yes. Could it be improved on - yes.

The fact it keeps coffee warmer for longer is a win. The claims of smart coffee grind capturing technology are frankly counter productive hoopla.

True the 'coffee capture' bit is fiddly and does not work well if you like really strong coffee. But it looks OK, is big and keeps the coffee warm for a decent time. Does the job.
