By Antonio Pineda VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
If you are a Smallville fan and only watch the TV show, you are getting only half the story. This 160-page authorized companion tells you the other half.

The book opens with a foreword by scriptwriters Alfred Gough and Miles Millar. This is followed by Genesis, an eight-page account of the creation of the series. It reveals how the idea of Smallville first came about and describes in detail the long journey of the cast and crew to getting the show on to our TV screens.

The next section is the meat of the book. Four pages are dedicated to every episode of Season One (except for the sensational season finale, Tempest, which warrants a more in-depth look over 10 pages). You'll find not only summaries but also behind-the-scenes look at every episode with interviews with those involved. And there's more: for every episode there are quotes, Did You Know? snippets, a soundtrack listing, excerpts from the Smallville Ledger and/or Smallville Torch, and the writers, directors, and guest stars are fully acknowledged. Add a generous helping of photos and you get absolutely everything to satisfy any fan's curiousity.

Next are the character profiles. All the show's mainstays are analyzed, with revealing insights from the actors that play them. Then we are introduced to the people behind the cameras, the crew, and last but not least there is a chapter called The Phenomenon offering explanations why Smallville, considered as a "calculated fluke" when conceptualized, has become and continues to be such a global hit.

The centre pages provide glossy and full colour photographs. Unfortunately, the rest of the book is in black and white but this is a minor blemish in an otherwise perfect publication. This is a book that all fans of the show should have alongside their Smallville DVD boxsets. Put simply, what is not covered here is not worth knowing.

Normally I am not easily persuaded to buy episode guides or official companions, as most of the times it is just a quick way to get you to spend money. But for this booklet I happily made an exception!
"Smallville - The official Companion" is a great read! Every episode of Smallville's first season is described and commented in detail, there are interviews with all the cast members about their characters, and the article on the crew is very informative. The idea to also include 'authentic' articles from the "Smallville Torch" and other 'official' Smallville media is not new, but it works wonderfully well. The quality of the black and white photos is good, the colour pictures are perfect. And so much new material!
If you are a fan of "Smallville", this book is a must!! I can't wait for the companion for season 2.

Nice guide to series beginning, could have a little more information 13 Jan 2006
By A. Burchfield - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Nice little guide to season 1 with information on each episode. You'll find out who starred, guest starred, the music used (the DVD set doesn't do that), trivia bits and a photo or two. Each episode is given a paragraph or so about the story followed by a page or two about behind the scenes things by cast & crew. There is also a made up Torch or Smallville Ledger article related to each story.

About the middle of the book there is a section of color cast photos, they aren't really episode related but seem to have been taken on location.

The final portion of the book has an indepth section on the season finale episode "Tempest" followed by character profiles, including actor comments, there's aso a short "meet the crew" bit and one about the popularity of the show.

My biggest complaint about the book is that there are no airdates given for any of the episodes, and you can get them from the DVD set.

Smallville - Season 1 Companion 12 Aug 2005
By Kelly M. - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This is a great book and a must have for any Smallville Fan. My favorite parts are how they list the music that is in every episode, how they quote the show, and how they have a detailed description of each major character in the show. You should buy this book and you should also buy the Smallville - Season 2 Companion with it.

A good book about Smallvilles third season. 8 Mar 2007
By G. Thomas - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
The book ist well structured and contains interesting information about the characters on the show and the actors themselves. Also the episodes are explained in a comprehensive way , so that the storylines become understandable even to those people who are not Smallville addicted ones yet. These days I own all the three companion books about Smallvilles Season One to three, which I purchased from amazon.com online.

I like these books a lot and have almost completed them one by one. The three official companions can only be recommended ! I`m already looking forward to The official Companion Season 4 by Craig Byrne, which I hope will contain coloured pictures. THats why I rated this item with only four stars and not five. In the first three companions all the pictures where in black and white, besides a coloured photo gallery ( the actors ) in the middle of each book.
