Product Description

Product Description

By the year 2000 tourism will be the biggest industry in the world. In this book, Martin Parr looks at tourism worldwide, exposing an increasingly homogenous "global culture" where in the search for different cultures those same cultures are destroyed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Travel broadens the mind?, 10 Nov 2010
This review is from: Small World (Hardcover)
Having never been much of a traveller I have always had a nagging feeling that I was missing out on the broadening of the mind said to result from it. Looking at Martin Parr's photographs in this book I needn't have worried. Most of the travellers appear to have a mental horizon that ends at the rim of the baseball cap that many of them wear. The photos are savagely satirical in many cases but are offset by an engaging humour. Some of them are hilarious and in many cases I laughed out loud when I saw them. Particular favourites are the back of a baseball-capped man's head facing the Sphinx. The cap is turned trendily backwards and has the word 'BOY' in almost obscene prominence across the front. A similar photo shows a baseball-capped man from behind photographing Notre Dame cathedral. This cap has 'New York Yankees' emblazoned across the front, complete with baseball bat logo. Or my personal favourite: the trendy Japanese tourist in sunshades complete with camera in front of Stonehenge. He is walking hurriedly away from the structure seemingly having taken his 'snaps' while a New Age tourist looks on in disgust, though the New Ager is also obscenely kitted out in all the coarse trappings of the tourist. So the book draws attention to the banality and cheapening of experience resulting from globalisation. I'm no expert on photography or photographers but for sheer hilarity this book is a must.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent real life photos, 30 Jun 2000
By Petrarch - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Small World: A Global Photographic Project, 1987-94 (Hardcover)
These photos capture exactly what it feels like to be a tourist at many places around the world. These aren't beautiful scenery or architectural portraits, but photos of real people acting and feeling like tourists in touristy places. Sometimes funny and ironic, sometimes depressing. The Great Pyramids with people posing in front of them, surrounded by local sellers of miniature trinkets. The leaning Tower of Pisa, with lots of tourists all doing the same schtick. I don't recommend this if you are looking for nice photos of world attractions. But I recommend it very highly if you are looking for photos of real people doing real things, acting themselves. Or if you want photos of what it's really like to be a tourist. Martin Parr has a couple other books out there - The Last Resort is also an excellent collection of real people photos of New Brighton.
