Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Given the range of music that has echoed around the "Later With Jools" TV studio, Jools Holland ought to be one of the most versatile musicians in Britain, and so he needs to be in the star-studded Small World Big Band. Among other things, he does Georgie-Fame-style rock & roll with Sting, Memphis soul with Paul Weller, slow blues with a hollering Joe Strummer, chugging R&B with Dr John (who gives one of the most colourful vocal performances here), some largely unreconstructed Beatles with Stereophonics, some sunny ska with Suggs, a reverb-drenched blues with Mark Knopfler (sadly without a guitar break) and an epic Anthony Newley style lament with Marc Almond. The biggest news is probably the debut of the late George Harrison's first new song for 10 years, the evocative "Horse To The Water". However, despite the variety, Jools's natural inclinations and his ever-present Rhythm & Blues Orchestra lead much of the music towards big band boogie. Sometimes the blues piano clichés pop up in places that perhaps they shouldn't, but would it be a Jools Holland party without them? --Mark Gilbert

5.0 out of 5 stars Some great music (and artists) we've been missing over here!, 31 Jan 2002
By Douglas A. Johnson Sr. (Weedsport, NY USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I found this CD in Kingston, Ontario back in December and bought it solely for "Horse to the Water". I had no idea who Jools was (I was a fan of Squeeze during the years when he had left the band), and I certainly hadn't heard of Sam Brown or Suggs. What a treasure chest of great songs and performances!

Because of George's passing and the demand for "Horse..." to be released in this country, this CD finally came out here in early January, instead of the original March release date. We've been missing something over here! "Valentine Moon" by Sam Brown (and Jools) is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard, the Stereophonics' "Revolution" is great, and Suggs' "Oranges and Lemons Again" is infectious. What talented artists!

The cuts featuring more familiar acts like Sting and Dr. John are excellent, as one would expect. Like any great CD containing cuts by various artists, this one makes you want to buy lots more. (I've already bought four more Jools CD's from amazon.uk, and I plan to buy "Stop" by Sam Brown among many others.) Jools' piano skills are amazing, and the big band sound adds a new dimension to all these great tracks. I'll recommend it over here to anyone who'll listen!

5.0 out of 5 stars Spectacular Sounds, 20 Aug 2002
By madison (Sydney, Australia) - See all my reviews
Just browsing and listening to newly released compilation albums in a store and bought this album on the basis of hearing the first track 7th Son with Sting. I had never before heard of Jools Holland as I live in Aust, but was pleasantly surprised at how familiar some songs sounded to me although I had never heard them before. Needless to say it has become my absolute favourite album.

Paul Weller and Style Council were a great band so a bit of an influence for me to buy, had never heard of Suggs but "oranges and lemons" is such a fun song - reminds me of a mix of Ian Dury/Madness. Also "Valentine Moon" is such a simply beautiful tune. I could not pin one song as my favourite as they all are so good, although "All that you are" for me resonates the emotions I feel for my mother and tugs at my heart every time I hear it.

I strongly recommend anyone to buy this wonderful album - you will not be disappointed. It's diversity of sounds from big band, jazz, rock, blues and boogie woogie is sure to please all who listen. Excellent value for money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspirational, 2 Jan 2002
By A Customer
A great CD, for both blues/boogie enthusiast or occasoinal listener. A great line up of artists performing songs both newly composed and covered along with the very talented Jools Holland and his Rythm and Blues Orchestra. The band are on top form and its nice for once to be able to actually hear the piano in a recording for once and Jools' piano playing gets the attention it deserves in this excellent compilation which is a pleasure to the listener and an inspiration to musicians, composers and learning pianists such as myself. If you are into good music then buy it!
