A modern, gothic tale of crime and redemption about an aging police officer from a small Ontario Mennonite town who hides a violent past until a local murder upsets the calm of his newly reformed life.

When a young, unidentified woman is found dead by the lake - the victim of a brutal and violent crime - Walter, an aging small town police officer (Peter Stormare; Fargo), is called to the scene of the town’s first murder investigation in decades.

Haunted by his past, and hampered by the mistrust of the community and a state police officer overseeing the investigation, he sets out to solve the murder, complicated by his ex-lover (Jill Hennessy) and his suspicion of her current boyfriend. As he delves deeper into the crime, his newly-reformed life begins to unravel threatening his relationship with Sam (Martha Plimpton; The Good Wife) and intertwining itself within the investigation and possibly the murder itself.

For a short film – just over 70 minutes – Small Town Murder Songs packs an awful lot into its bleak and beautiful depiction of a remote (and religious) community in rural Canada. If Nordic noir could be made outside Scandinavia then that’s what this would be, and indeed many of the core characters come from the old country.
The body of a young woman has been found, murdered. The small community are shocked and threatened and turn to their local police chief, who himself has a chequered past. An extreme act of violence repelled the woman he loved and caused his religious family to ostracise him. He’s gradually been rehabilitating himself, has just been baptised into a new church, and is finding some solace in a new relationship. But he still cares deeply for his previous lover, and it soon appears that she may be shielding one of the chief murder suspects…
The core performances in this are remarkable; Peter Stormare plays a powder keg of repressed rage, attempting to change himself by seeking redemption at church but unable to turn away from what he knows is wrong – even if his behaviour compromises the investigation. The film is punctuated by bible quotes and glorious, full-bodied choral songs, backed by primordial drumming. It’s not so much a murder investigation as the study of a man’s soul and his path to possible redemption: will he continue making the same mistake? Can he live what his scriptures suggest and find salvation by turning the other cheek?

Subtle, understated and succinct, this is an astonishing film – the like of which you’d normally find in art house theatres, not multiplexes. It’s visually and intellectually fulfilling, if a tad emotionally gruelling.

I believe it is possible to tell a story in a movie in under 90 mins but this film suffered because of it. There wasn't enough depth to the characters and you needed to know more about their backstory. The acting was fine and the soundtrack was excellent but I needed more flesh on the bones
Disappointing !!!

I've given this 5 stars despite a certain amount of nudity and bad language (call me old fashioned but I'd like my movies without both). That said, its the _most_ interesting 172 minutes of film I ever watched. Glad I bought it.
