Don't be fooled by the title: these are not "tales" in the sense of Kipling's highly fictionalised accounts of animals in his Just So Stories. Instead, the authors offer brief factual accounts (just a single paragraph) of the extinction of various animals, with nice drawings of the animal. On the opposite page is a cartoon illustrating that account: another way of telling the same story. There are 27 animals in total, and they're organised by continent: 10 for the Americas, 4 for Africa, 8 for Eurasia, and 5 for Oceania -- so, just a taster of the devastation we've wrought on other species.

The idea is good, and it's well illustrated and nicely put together, but there's a bit of a problem: the vocabulary (and syntax) of the factual accounts is quite advanced, including words such as "idiosyncratic", "industrialised", "unsettlingly", quite aside from the technical vocab.("herbivores" etc.). This means the book can't be read independently by a child before, I would say, 10 or 11 for an advanced reader, and even then most will need help with the concepts. That's fine, but the factual paragraphs are a bit too brief for a 10- or 11-year-old to get their teeth into, and the cartoons are really quite juvenile in their humour -- 7/8-year-old level, I'd say.

So, having bought this for my toddler (I had only the title to go on!) and found they're not fun fictional stories, I'm now having difficulty deciding who to give this to. If you have a 7/8-yr-old of exceptional reading ability and a love of facts, and are happy to spend the time reading it with them, it's great. Otherwise...

My 9 year old son loves this. The illustrations are bold and the whole book doesn't take itself too seriously.
