5.0 out of 5 stars Small Talk 26 Jun 2013
Small talk is an easy to read guide about children's speech and language development from birth up to the age of five. As an owner of a nursery we have recommended this book to our parents and families. Feedback was unanimous; Small Talk's simple and fun activities really encourage and promote high levels of engagement with your little ones and focus on positively developing a child's ability to communicate successfully.
This book is about enjoying your child's development as much as supporting it. I speak first hand when I say it has greatly helped close friends to understand and support their child's language and development needs.

4.0 out of 5 stars good book, not quite finished... 30 July 2013
I am halfway through this book and have found it very informative and helpful. I had no massive concerns about my son's language development but it has reassured me that he is at the right sort of level and has helpful ways to develop baby's and toddler's speech. I shall use some of the baby tips when my second baby arrives. The book is written well with case studies which I always like as it brings the theory to life. I would suggest this is a good read for new mums and also professionals like childminders, etc. It has pointed out potential flaws in my communication and I aim to change some of the ways I deal with things due to this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absorbing and Informative... a great read! 7 Feb 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I have really enjoyed reading this book, which is engaging and practical and easy to read. There are plenty of ideas to help develop your child's speech and language and guidelines of what to expect at the different stages. Having seen friends' children be diagnosed with delayed language, I have always been concerned that this might happen to my 18 month old. In fact she's the opposite, but this book has given me confidence, and loads of activities to try. These are not at all onerous or difficult, and indeed are lovely things to do together, such as making a book with pictures of family and friends (very helpful for greeting people and talking about what we're doing each day) and talking about what you're doing (a key activity for Lathey, and one that I already did without thinking, but she has given me ideas of how to extend it). It's great to have so many easy and fun ways to help my baby communicate more effectively. Thanks Nicola Lathey!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great Learning tool 25 Oct 2013
By Georgie
This book is full of great advice, songs, games and information about communication development in -0 to 5s. It impressed me with so many useful ideas and clear explanations how to best prepare children for their early years schooling as well as everything else you would expect to find in a book about speech development. There are so many simple things that we can do (and avoid doing!) to encourage and develop communication even when we are so short of time. I would really recommend reading the book cover to cover however short of time you are as the benefits are so great.

Nicola is a brilliant speech therapist who has done fantastic work with my six-year-old son, who has autism. She really is very gifted - she has a unique ability to form a rapport with children and is full of enthusiasm and ideas. Over the course of a year working with Nicola, my son's gone from having very little expressive language to taking pleasure in describing the world around him. So I knew her book would be full of really useful advice, and sure enough, it is!
I think Nicola and Tracey, her co-writer, have done a great job of breaking this subject down, giving information about different stages of development and handy tips for things you can do to help your child. It's a good read and very accessible, and deserves to become a classic. Every new parent should have a copy! I think parents will find it both reassuring and empowering, and I can't recommend it highly enough to anybody who is concerned about their child's speech, or just wants to help them get the best possible start.

5.0 out of 5 stars Reassuring 4 July 2013
This is an excellent resource. As a mum of one I am encouraged to find out some things I do naturally really help my sons speech development and to use new techniques to keep up with his learning.
The book is written in a very friendly way with some "worst case scenarios" and how to avoid as well as anecdotes from the author (my child loves iggle piggle and mr tumble too).
Easy to jump in and out of and re-read the section relevant to sons current level of speech as well as look at what we can expect as he grows. Useful information on fun "small talk" activities.
In all a wealth of information given in an easy to follow way and you do not feel as if you are pushing your child following the techniques, just understanding their exploration and understanding a bit better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must-have for any worried parent! 13 Oct 2013
By Alex
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I was really happy with this book, as it has given me some excellent activities to try with my 18 month toddler, who the pediatricians have advised us that we need to be more proactive with speech, as he has the speech of a 12 month old. I've found the book really helpful with some great ideas, a must-read for any parent who wants to become a bit more pro-active with their toddler. Over the weekend, we have already noticed an improvement in his speech, so this book really does help. The website for the book is also very helpful and has some really good videos - The frog song is very popular with my children, and they certainly enjoy mummy making a fool of herself on a daily basis!
