I bought this because I love KM Peyton's books - the Flambards series and the Patrick Pennington ones especially. She is a born story teller and this is no exception. Set in the early 19th century it tells a story of a poor farmer's family and their relationships with each other, the village neighbours and with their horses. It is really a lovely, sad and gripping story and I sat down and read it all in one day. When I saw there was a sequel, Greater Gains, I bought it immediately. Well recommended, but perhaps not for younger readers - there is a sexual content in it that may not be suitable.

I've been reading Ms. Peyton's books since I was 12 years old (I'm now in my 40s), and she just keeps getting better! Like many of Peyton's books, Small Gains is a a little dark; she does not sugarcoat life but lets us see her heroines and their horses as they really are--often ragged around the edges and sometimes desperate. But Clara, like other Peyton heroines before her--is utterly admirable, and her story is riveting.
I couldn't put the book down, and I suspect that will be the case for many readers! Don't miss it!

Romantic, funny and very, very poignant are just three of the words to describe Small Gains. I picked it up, and immediately got a feel that this would be a good book...and I was right! K.M Peyton is a fantastic author, she has definitely created a unique and excellent book.
Set at the beginning of the nineteenth century, Small Gains follows the story of Clara Garland, a farmer's daughter who has a special way with horses. Unfortunately, her destiny is deeply intertwined with that of Nat Grover, who is part of a rich and horrible landowing family. After he and Clara's sister fall in love, life begins to change and everything spirals out of control...
It has already become one of my favourite books, and was just amazing. I could not put it down, and gave me great joy to read. Well done, KM Peyton!
