Small Businesses need to capitalize on the investments they make in IT to drive the business forward. SBS 2008 is uniquely positioned to deliver, but a poor implementation becomes a hindrance rather than a benefit to your business. Well implemented solutions enable your business to appear larger, yet more dynamic than many enterprises.

It's easy to get Small Business Server 2008 up and running when you've got this book to hand. It helps you in a clear and friendly manner to understand how to implement SBS 2008 inside your business in a way that matches your business needs. The author's experience enables him to share a tried and tested path to deliver the business benefits without becoming bogged down in unnecessary details that are not relevant to small businesses.

SBS 2008 is a fantastic investment for Small Businesses to make towards a well managed and highly functional IT solution in their business. This book is the culmination of many years advising small business owners and consultants on the recommend, tried and tested path to implement small business technology from Microsoft. Through this book you will gain an understanding of the features you can choose to use and then how to securely implement the server to deliver them. It will guide you through the installation and configuration process with the help of step-by-step instructions and plentiful screenshots. It will also explain how you can benefit from the collaboration tools based on SharePoint and how you can protect all your business data with a back-up process that covers anything from deleted files to a fire in the office.

Imagine how great you'll feel when your Small Business Server 2008 is ready and working, and you can get back to surfing the Internet!

About the Author

David Overton started his first two businesses while he was still at school. Both were very successful. One was selling stationary to his fellow pupils at prices below the local shops and the second was providing no-nonsense IT training without the use of jargon to local businesses. Since then his passion for small business has, on occasion, been tempered by his own employment in much larger businesses. In 2000 he joined the ranks within Microsoft and moved back towards his passion for small businesses. There he was tasked with improving the knowledge of small business consultants in delivering business-centric IT to their customers. This culminated with him holding the role of Head of Technology for Small Businesses within Microsoft UK. Since then he has progressed his career inside Microsoft, but he continues to play an active part in the small business teams at Microsoft and the marketplace. Outside of work he is married and has two beautiful children. He enjoys sailing as an escape from life and he is always looking for opportunities to sail throughout the year.

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing 3 Jun 2010
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I'm somewhat disappointed with this book. It does not address most of the problems (and questions) I had when installing my first SBS 2008. Also, the author gives several links to his website where it is supposed to be additional information - but nothing is there...
Overall, I found the tone right for novices wanting to install and configure their own servers. But it really falls short of anything but the most basic stuff (no clue on how to configure WSUS, for instance...).

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book 11 May 2009
Format:Paperback
There are a numnber of books on SBS 2008 on the market but none cover migration as well as this book. I have learned a lot from this book when doing a migration from SBS2003 to SBS 2008. Its also a great learning tool when doing the SBS2008 Exam. If there is only one book you buy on SBS2008, then this is it .

4.0 out of 5 stars Helpful but needs more depth 1 Jan 2010
Format:Paperback
This book has some useful information in it for setting up a new server from a clean build. I think there could have been more depth for setting up users, shares, printers (there is nothing on printers at all), security, groups, policies, AD etc.

The book is geared up more for doing a migration from an older Windows Server 2003 server.

It would have been useful to give some information on getting the required data/settings (email, email settings, user settings, user group settings, files, AD, policies etc) from the old server manually for transfer to the new clean server.

If you are setting up a new server by migration then this book should be pretty useful but if you are setting up a new server from a clean build, you may need to get more in depth info from an additional book.

In summary, the book is quite easy to read, understand and follow but lacks a bit more depth especially for configuring a new server from a clean build.
