If you're reading this review, chances are you're aware of Dave McKean's art, probably his brilliant covers on the Sandman comics. Well, this is not more of the same. The Small Book of Black and White lies is a collection of McKean's black and white (surprise, surprise) photography. McKean's innovative use of graphic editing really comes into its own here, with some truly brilliant images, ranging from the dark and atmospheric, to the beautiful, to the utterly bizarre. I'd recommend this as a coffee-table book, but it's limited edition, so perhaps not. Instead, keep it safe and cherish the genius within.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating photography! 18 July 2000
By Collin M. David - Published on
While enduring a very limited print run, this has to be one of the most fascinating books of photography that I have even seen; gentle juxtapositions of themes, constructions of disturbing human / animal / plant anatomies, torn, blurred, all toned in gold and copper colours. This is a book that any and every photographer should look over! McKean seems to have taken art, design and photography sll to new levels.
