5.0 out of 5 stars Captivating Page Turner, 9 Jul 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Smack (Hardcover)
This book has got to be one of my favorite books. I read it within a week! It reels you in and makes you want to go on and read for hours without stopping. With each character's own chapters, the author lets you see their point of view. It helps you look in from different perspectives, not just one. As a teenager myself, it made me realize how easy it is to be lured into a bad crowd and how easy it is to get addicted to toxins. There are so many morals to this story also. The major being DON'T TAKE DRUGS and the one that every adult wants you to know: DON'T DISREGARD YOUR PARENTS. A definite must read!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars True-life a real page turner, 24 Dec 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Smack (Hardcover)
Smack is the first book I have read in a long time that actually describes addiction for what it truly is - ugly. It does not sugarcoat the reality or convince others that heroin is "fun". Overall, a masterpiece sure to live on for generations to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars Like nothing you will ever read! Totally amazing, 7 Oct 2004
This review is from: Smack (Paperback)
I love books, i love reading them and getting lost in other peoples lives, but never out of the many books i have read, have any of them changed my whole outlook on life.
It is written about teenagers in the 1980's and yet is still completely believable and realistic now! The way in which the book is set out makes it impossible to become bored with. Each chapter is told by a different character in turn, focusing on which ever characters feelings are most interesting, relevant or controversial at the time. This makes the book extremely well rounded, giving us the whole picture about what is going on!
In all it is a gripping, amazing and yet totally down to earth book which talks openly about real issues among teenagers. The characters in the book are 14 and so am i, i do think that it would be hard for people younger than that to empathise with the characters but i am sure teenagers would completely connect and for adults it would be an excallent opportunity for insight into a teenage mind and also a chance for reminiscing about there own past.
I would often be unsure about buying a book with a name like junk in case it was less of a controversial and realistic view and more of a 'moral at the end of the story' kind of book but this just tells it like it is! Not only does it swallow you up into the lives of the characters but it also makes you look at your own, in a perspective most people would never have seen of there own accord! That's why if you don't read this book your honestly missing out!
