This is a consistently high-energy album, with pretty much every track built around the electric combination of Carina's vocals and rock guitar sounds. The music here is most comparable to the opening tracks of her previous album, The Disconnection. The songs all feel very original and different from one another, but the album manages to maintain it's own distinct character when compared to her previous two albums, The First Blood Mystery and The Disconnection.

Where The Disconnection started you in one place and took you somewhere utterly different as the album came to a close (a good thing!), Slow Motion Addict starts and ends with songs that could have come from somewhere near Garbage's Version 2.0.

The jazzy acoustic arrangements of the first record have made way for a more developed, commercial and accessible sound (without the glossiness that PJ Harvey's 'Stories..' album may have arguably suffered). There is still a satisfying rawness and a heartfelt edge to much of the music, particularly in some of the later tracks like Slow Motion Addict and January Heart.

Carina's vocals are as good if not better than before, with plenty of thrilling Carina Round moments that quicken the senses - there may be none of the sparsely arranged tracks of previous albums, but she is still spellbinding.

The lyrics, whilst more accessible, are again very poetic, exploring similar themes such that anyone touched by her previous work (as I am) will enjoy this album a great deal. Buy this if you are at all interested. The depth of this music is simply incredible, with a ridiculous amount of replayability.

Superb 12 April 2008

Whether or not you're that excited about Glenn "Alanis Morisette" Ballard is at the production helm is a matter of personal taste but he can have a tendency to smother some artists and for a while it seems like he's going to chalk up another victim in the shape of Round; but fear not. Round is far too wilful and self-minded to allow this for too long.

This does make for a somewhat hit and miss experience. Whilst the likes of Stolen Car (with its hugely radio-friendly rock guitar riff) and Take The Money (which gives you everything you'd want from Round based on her previous output) there are the likes of Ready To Confess (where, sadly, it could be anyone delivering the lines given how the production smothers any individuality out of the proceedings).

Thankfully, most of the "duff" songs are done with early and by the time you hit the aforementioned Take The Money, the ride to the end of the album is a thrilling and exhilarating one. Any attempts to homogenise Round have obviously failed. She's as individual as ever. And in this form she's well worth a listen.

I have been looking forward to getting this album for ages and felt compelled to write this review only after one listen. This immediataely grabbed me from the start - it is clearly a much more accessible sound she has developed.

From the first track you can see a much more focused approach and direction for her sound. This focus is a more produced, direct and hence accessibale sound which will open her music up to new fans.

Throughout the album she shifts the focus of the songs from away from the hooks and her voice often to the music itself - making this sound much more like the effort of a band than on any of her other albums. The rythm section is tight and focused and the guitars jagged and sharp.

In many of the tracks we still see Carina moving from girl like whisper into rock goddess within one sentence. But there is a big shift in the emphasis of the music which really does rock out in some moments just as we saw on 'Into my blood' from 'the Disconnection' - that track was loud raw and fantasticly furious - the tracks on this release are little more slick but still just as effective.

Stand out tracks from my first listen were 'Gravity Lies' which has an almost Stones esque bluesey hook, but never does what you predict - constantly switching from singer songwritier style to full on guitar lead indie/rock.

The title track is also a great blend of carina's more sombre side (unfortunately the album doesnt contain anything as acoustic and frail as 'Elegy' nor idiosyncratic as 'message to appollo' from her first album) which has some programmed beats that wouldnt be amiss in one of Trent Reznor's more recent pop songs.

the single 'come to you' is probably a good choice of single - it doesnt veer from genre to genre as much as the other tracks but is a good steady track with powerful vocals in the chorus - which fits nicely alongside some of the moring daring arrangements.

All in all - this album is much more focused on the music than the other 2 - which is a great thing as it is rich, varied and very interesting - her vocals can still be shrill, soft and firm in the same chorus. her lyrics are still intimate and interesting without ever being too metaphorical.

fans of PJ harvey will like this as will anybody interested in modern day indie music - in my opinion this has much much much more to offer than anything by current day indie bands.

highly recommended - this isnt groundbreaking - but one of the best i have heard from a rock orientated female artist.
