Product Description

Italy, the birthplace of the Slow movement and the home of Slow Food, is the second destination in our new Slow series. We have handpicked 46 exceptional places to stay - places where attention is lavished on some of the most important things in life: convivial meals, community, friends and family, a respect for the environment and a celebration of regional distinctiveness. From the mountainous north, through cypress-dotted Tuscany and on down to the gutsy, colourful south, you'll discover an unmatched passion for Slow Food and Slow Travel. You will meet farmers, literary people, wine-makers and craftsmen - all with rich stories to tell. Go Slow Italy celebrates fascinating people, fine architecture, history, landscape and real food.

This is the most amazing book and helped us in deciding which places to stay when we toured Italy and Sicily this summer.
As always the Sawday recommendations are accurate, informative and exactly the places we enjoy staying in.
All the families we stayed with were charming, friendly and most of all the food was delightful. We were made to feel part of the family and were given lots of inside tips on where to go and what to see.
This book is more than a guide of where to stay but is an inside track into italian life and culture. Worth every penny.

A delight 22 Jun 2009
By Mr Gumby TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE

This is a delightful and yet highly practical book.

It is beautifully illustrated and wonderfully written, the sort of accommodation guide that you may well sit down and read cover-to-cover, for pleasure. It starts by introducing the Go Slow concept and then is divided into four areas - North, Tuscany, Central and South. Each has an introduction that makes you want to be there. Now! And then there are several pages, including many high-quality photographs, on each recommended establishment. In many cases, home recipes from owners and other gems are included. You will feel you know the owners before you even leave home.

Something like 50 properties are covered, and a map shows their location, from Venezia to Sicily. Most are high-quality B&B-style places, some more like boutique hotels. All, I think, offer dinner. Many can provide self-catering accommodation as well as rooms, while a few are self-catering only.

I think the best way to use this book is to choose your favourite places to stay and plan a touring route around them. You'll enjoy the planning almost as much as the holiday!

I had high hopes for this book and was bitterly disappointed. It has really beautiful evocative and quirky photography to whet your appetite, but is so unbalanced in its coverage.
Tuscany is virtually 50 % of the book with the other British middle-class retreat of Umbria well covered too. The rest of Italy gets scant coverage and some regions are not included at all.
Why is that ? I have stayed at a couple of the 'Special Places' this book recommends - and they certainly were very special. However, it's the rather pompous tone of the text that irritates as if it is promoting the books superiority.
