Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Guitarist and vocalist Keb' Mo' seems to be continuing in the direction suggested by his previous album, Just Like You, with this release. That is to say, mixed in with the country-blues style that dominated his self-titled debut are elements of soul, R&B, and rock (the opening "Muddy Water" sounds, in Keb' Mo's hands, a great deal like the Rolling Stones' "Honky Tonk Woman"). When this works, as it does on Slow Down's title track, it works very, very well. Some of the ballads, though, sound a little bland, and when the album returns to the tight, rock-inflected "Soon As I Get Paid" or the funky "A Letter to Tracy", it's refreshing. The real treats, however, come late in the album. With "Love in Vain" and "God Trying to Get Your Attention", Mo' gets down to the roots, and the sheer simplicity of the closing "I'm Telling You Now" is nothing short of beautiful, allowing Mo's considerable talent as a singer and guitarist to shine through. --Genevieve Williams

Another output of quality from Keb Mo. A good example of Keb's songwriting ability is the steady laid back song 'Henry', inspired by Taj Mahal, with fine guitar playing and vocals soaked in atmosphere as the singer reflects on past times whilst still keeping an eye on the future. An offering of rhythm and blues with 'Soon As I Get Paid' whilst it's hard to put a label on the title track 'Slow Down' which is a funky rhythmic soulful number with harmonica playing and a brass section plus KM's rich vocals. 'Rainmaker' is slow soul sung with usual conviction and depth, and once again Keb's harmonica playing adds to the feeling of the song. Robert Johnson's 'Love In Vain' gets a purely acoustic guitar and vocal treatment which works well. Twelve of the thirteen songs were co-written by Keb. It's already won a Grammy award. A very good album rooted in the blues and touching on soul and beyond with ease. Recommended.

This is a great Keb cd in a similar vein to his earlier albums. It has his usual Robert Johnson influenced playing and great vocals. This album has some great blues and is very laid back. 'Love In vain' is especially good and this album keeps Keb churning out his chilled blues that fans love. A great place to start if your new to Keb Mo, or even if you're new to blues.

Take one hot summer evening, open a bottle of chilled Orvietto, gather a few friends, light the barbecue and, as the sun slips in the sky but on 'Slow Down' and chill, chill, chill! I guarantee the neighbours won't complain but they may come round and ask you what you are listening to.
