Set in the northwest of England, from the eighties up to the present date. The book is a tale of revenge against a family of ruthless gangsters, by a pair of brothers exacting revenge for the death of their sister in a suicide.
The book transcends from the eighties to the present time, detailing the hate and scorn the Bernsteins have for the mob and decide to avenge them for their sister death and for the gang rape, the group comitted, and were acquitted of in court.
Going forward to the present day, the families have grown up. The mob has created a vast empire dealing in drugs and weapons and show ruthlessness in dealing with outsiders.
But the Bernsteins decide to bring down this gang picking off each one of the group until they reach the ringleader subjecting the gang to confusion and abject terror, not knowing a vendetta against them was being exacted for a grudge twenty or so years ago.
The story is well told and is based around three characters. The detective Alec Ramsay who sticks like glue to the case of the murders. Ashwan Malik the ruthless gangster who is the enforcer for the gang and responsible for Sarah Bernsteins suicide. And Richard, Sarahs brother who was bullied by the gang in his youth, but decides to turn the tide on his former tormentors to get revenge.
If you like detective novels with a gangster theme, this should be up your street. The characters are believable and the story thought provoking. You just enjoy the turn of the tide as the gangsters are picked off one by one.
The novel is worth shelling out the pennies for. I loved it.
A deserved 10/10
