Format: Paperback
I grew up in Johannesburg, in the same suburb as Joe Slovo had lived, and all through the book I was reminded of places, names and characters so familiar from my youth. The experience of growing up in the days of Apartheid will never leave me and I am still haunted by the memories and the language of those terrible times. Joe Slovo was a hero to the voiceless masses and at the same time was seen as evil incarnate by the white Nationalist Party. The South African Communist Party was a banned organisation, along with the ANC, PAC and others, and we were brought up to see "Communists and Terrorists" as much the same thing people who wanted to undermine the artificially maintained status quo of the white minority. Joe was one of the many who went into exile whilst keeping the power of the ANC/SACP alive through underground activities both in Africa and abroad. He and his wife, Ruth First, (who was assassinated whilst in Mozambique)showed unbelievable courage and resiliance. Like Oliver Tambo he died too soon, but thankfully lived long enough to see the unbanning of the SACP and the other organisations and the establishment of a new political culture in his beloved country. His unfinished autobiography makes for heartrending but ultimately uplifting reading. Thank you Joe.

A global hero!!! 3 Oct. 2013

The book was very informative. It showed the soul of a man who was not well known to the world for the sacrifices he and his family made and the triumph at the end of one of the most brutal times of the 20th century. The book captivated me from beginning to end
