One of the best 26 April 2010
By Homer
Format:Paperback
This is possibly my favourite of the Bolitho series. Here we see our hero as a Captain for the first time, but not on a frigate or a great ship-of-the-line - he's Master of the little sloop, The Sparrow. The fact it's a small ship makes this particular cast of characters stronger and more memorable than some, and there's a real feeling of a 'band' developing for the first time. The sloop is also independent of the fleet, which keeps us clear of the politics so we can just enjoy the straightforward action of a ship at war. It's set in the American War of Independence, and Kent gives a well-rounded picture of the situation, showing sympathy and understanding for the position of both 'rebels' and 'loyalists'. My only nitpick is the big time-jump in the middle and I can't help wishing he'd written more there - but only because I was enjoying it so much. Lots of action, good characters, and a clear, fast-moving story. Highly recommended.

I am currently working my way through the Richard Bolitho series which I am enjoying vary much, and this installment is no exception.

This one takes place over a 3 year period during the American Revolution. Bolitho is promoted to Commander and is appointed his first command onboard the sloop-of-war, Sparrow.

Like all of the Bolitho books so far this one was vary easy to read yet exciting with lots of action.

I have now just started To Glory We Steer in which Bolitho is now a captain.

Great book! 12 Aug 2008
By Dr J
Format:Paperback
Do not, repeat, do NOT start reading this book late in the evening when you have to work the next morning! You'll be red-eyed in the morning. I could hardly put it down. Our hero, Bolitho, is put in command of a sloop, the Sparrow, and takes on the Americans and French in various places and assignments. There is even a girl. But, thank goodness, she doesn't ruin the story, as the inclusion of so many girls often does to a good war story. Nevertheless, Kent keeps the narrative moving along with plenty of action and adventure. As opposed to some other series, many of Bolitho's officers, indeed friends, actually get killed. So, you never really know what is going to happen in any particular battle.
This is great reading. Of course, it's not a documentary (as some other reviewer pined away about); it's naval FICTION. Whenever anything is put to print or on film for entertainment, that's what it is--entertainment.
And, boy, is this good stuff! Can hardly wait to pick up the next book.
