With the proliferation of Amazon marketplace sellers and items it is possible to go through pages and pages of items looking for a suitable accessory. That was true when I wanted to mount my iPhone at eyeline level in my car - I must have read 100 different item reviews, trying to make a confident decision. Taking into account all sensible requirements this was the only item that eventually met all my criteria
Firstly I didn't want some suction cup device on my windscreen or dash as I know these are frequently fallible or prone to leave a mark. Therefore I found the idea of an air vent mount attractive, as of course these are positioned towards the face. I also didn't want some contraption that took form-fitting of one phone model too literally and thus didn't require iPhone's to be taken in and out of bumpers or cases.
Finally I wanted evidence of positive existing reviews and a confident description that implied flexibility of the product. It was painful finding the right one from so many pages of items and this was it. It is wonderful therefore that on receiving the item I found it even better than I imagined in choosing it, once installed it feels sturdy without any stresses or pressures on the car air vents or the unit itself.
Better still, the design of the free-moving ball joint means that the frame which actually holds the phone is completely movable in all directions (not just round 360 degrees but tilting and angling in every axis) and does so with a very satisfying stiffness so that it will not move once released; there is nothing more impressive than twisting the phone from portrait to landscape one handed without any give when you let go.
Finally, the "grip" is made of movable "teeth" so no port top or bottom of any phone need be blocked (I'm using a dock extender cable down to an FM transmitter iPod mount in the cigarette lighter, and have slid the teeth to their widest point to leave room for the plug into the iPhone's port). With the iPhone in place the body of the holder is totally hidden from view, so the iPhone just appears to float freely!
Forget all others, this really is the most perfect iPhone car holder of the many hundreds listed on Amazon and good value too. The one minor criticism is it comes with no assembly instructions so figuring out which bit clips into which bit is a trial and error puzzle for 10 minutes, but it's so worth the minor hassle once your iPhone is satisfyingly mounted to the left of the steering wheel angled perfectly in line of sight!
