You can fall in love with these songs. Like Joni Mitchell they are so nakedly lived, honestly rendered, an invasion of privacy unless we resonate with them, embarrassing if not. This might be another man's junk, but it is my treasure.
Scott
This is the finest of her three American releases. There are stunning songs on the other two albums, "Night in a Strange Town" and "Unravel." While "Night" has more studio polish, and "Unravel" is far more daring and varied in its arrangements, the songs and the singing in "Slightly Haunted" shine through with the kind of elegance that can make you fall in love with a singer, a song, an album. Some of the songs here are so perfectly realized that they seem simple, natural and almost timeless.
This is not the album for you if you don't like sad songs. I don't know of anyone who has better conveyed the aching awareness that love is dying, the enduring wrestle with the power of loneliness, the waning of warmth and daylight as a long Canadian winter moves in, or the sheer exuberant miracle of survival.
My advice is to get this CD. If you like it, find a chance to see her. She generally plays in small venues and its a wonderful treat to see a performer of her talent, humor and presence up close and at a small fraction of the price of a heavily promoted concert. You can find listings for her and many others at places like Musi-cal.com. Then, if you are intrigued by some of her other songs, consider buying a CD at the concert. Chances are she'll be there to sign them, the support will mean a lot to her as it does to many singer-songwriters who are unfairly ignored.
