Product Description

They say you’ll know when you’re in love. What if you don’t?

Alys, a single parent and certified romantic disaster area, is always falling for unattainable men—the latest one being the dead author of a “borrowed” book of poetry. When she reluctantly returns the book to its rightful owner, she meets Leo. He’s very much alive, very much attracted to her and, well, it’s love at first sight.

Isn’t it?

After all, she’s a single mum with a boring job in a bookshop and, as her daughter puts it, gravity’s not going to hold off forever. Leo’s got the financial stability she’s been craving and he looks like an aftershave advert. So it must be love.

Mustn’t it?

Then there’s Piers, whose spontaneity draws her like a magnet. But is it love she feels, or just his infectious love of life? Before she can choose, an unexpected source threatens to lay bare the lie she has been living for the last sixteen years.

With happiness close to slipping out of her grasp, Alys is forced to ask herself whether she’s ever really been in love at all.

Superior Chick Lit 3 May 2010
Format:Paperback
Though this book will undoubtedly be classified as "chick lit" it belies the intelligent and thoughtful writing that Jane Lovering has put into her second novel. The characters are well constructed, the storylines intriguing and the narrative is well written. In addition Jane's hilarious one liners insinuate themselves just when you least expect it. In short, like her first novel, "Reversing Over Liberace", "Slightly Foxed" is a joy to read.

Alys works part time in a bookshop in York. She has a nearly grown up daughter, Florence, a cat with attitude called Grainger and she is a single parent since her ex-husband left to move in with a posher model. She feels she's missing out because there is no significant other in her life. When reading a poetry book changes her life and brings her into contact with the mysterious Leo she starts to think she has found the one person she is meant to be with.

Full of marvellous characters - her work colleagues, Simon and Jacinta - Alys's sort of step son Piers who is her ex-husband's new wife's son by a previous marriage who is always there but much too young; daughter Florence herself is an entertaining person and the relationship between her and Alys is very well done. I enjoyed this book and there are some fantastic one liners and descriptions. The book made me laugh and cry and I loved the author's writing style because it really brings the characters and the story to life. These are people I would recognise if I met them.

I liked the setting of the story and it makes a welcome change to read a book set anywhere but London and to read about characters who are not fantastically rich and who do actually work for a living. People get drunk, have conversations they wish they hadn't had, get irritable and angry and turn up late for work - this is real life but more intense. I recommend this author to anyone who likes women's fiction but doesn't want a book featuring a fantastically beautiful heroine who always does everything right.

This is the second title by Jane Lovering that I have read and reviewed here. The first one was Reversing Over Liberace which I reviewed last October, I am pleased to say that I enjoyed Slightly Foxed as much if not slightly more, as it was realistic, the last one I found somewhat farcical. I also like the title of this one very much it seems relevant to the book store setting.

I was drawn into the story straight away as the author's witty way of writing about believable characters that lead ordinary lives had me feeling happy, also sad at times though as Alys the protagonist gets herself in a romantic tangle. A single parent, with a teenage daughter, working in a bookshop in York, who feels that vital something is missing from her life. That vital something is of course, a significant other to love, a romantic disaster Alyce is searching for love and happiness. The cast of characters that cross her path in her day to day life are exactly the sort of people you may recognise from your own life. Her daughter Florence, Piers, who is Florence's father's stepson, her work colleagues Jacinata and Simon and Leo who comes into her life because of a poetry book! Does Alyce gets herself romantically involved with someone or as she fears does her chance of happiness slip away from her? What is love, has she ever been in love and will she recognise love for what it is?

I think this novel will appeal to those of you who are fans of romantic contemporary fiction because it will make you laugh and provide you with a few hours of relaxing entertainment.
