Sliding Void (Book 1 of the Sliding Void science fiction series)

DESCRIPTION

Captain Lana Fiveworlds has a hell of a lot of problems.

She's sliding void in an ageing seven-hundred-year-old space ship, scrabbling around the edges of civilised space trying to find a cargo lucrative enough to pay her bills without proving so risky that it'll kill her. She's got an alien religious freak for a navigator, an untrustworthy android for a first mate, a disgraced lizard for a trade negotiator and a deserter from the fleet acting as her chief engineer.

And that was well before an ex-crewman turns up wanting Lana to rescue a barbarian prince from a long-failed colony world.

Unfortunately for Lana, the problems she doesn't know about are even more dangerous. In fact, they just might be enough to destroy Lana's rickety but much-loved vessel, the Gravity Rose, and jettison her and her crew into the void without a spacesuit.

But there's one thing you can never tell an independent space trader. That's the odds...

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, but... 17 Feb 2012

Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Although I appreciate that this is the first in a series and it is well crafted, interesting and a good read it is very very short. OK so thats why the star is off there is nothing technically wrong with this book, I enjoyed reading it, I might even purchase the next one (especially if its longer) in fact the only thing missing from this is the rest of it. If you are looking for a new Sci-Fi read then this is good, and i do recommend it but its a short story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sliding Void is a terrific SF read 7 Jan 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I'm glad to see Stephen Hunt has moved on from fantasy and steampunk to my favourite genre... science fiction, and, within the traditions of fast moving pulp action, he does the sector proud with a tale of a crew of misfits blundering their way into high adventure across the universe, including a street jiving android, a couple of aliens, a female captain with Lana Croft overtones and a nifty (large) space ship called the Gravity Rose. I really enjoyed this SF-ictional outing and trust it will be the first of many more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good old-fashioned/newfangled space opera 3 Jan 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Sliding Void is an exciting entrée to the alliance universe, Stephen Hunt's ongoing mission to entertain the hordes of science fiction hungry readers who miss TV series like Star Trek, StarGate and, well, just about anything else with a `star' in it (and a few that don't, such as Firefly).

This novella features the scoundrel crew of a free trading starship trying to make a fast buck on the right and wrong side of the law. For their first mission (well, at least as far as we are concerned), they have to pick up a new entrant to their motley ranks, a barbarian nobleman from a failed civilization.

If you love great characters and space opera in general, then you'll jump a light year or two for a work this amusing!

An easy read and entertaining. I am to date half way through the book. The characters are well described, and the plot interesting.

4.0 out of 5 stars A bit pricey, but... 8 Jan 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
For such a short story it is a little on the pricey side, i feel. It should be all one book with the next in the series. Having said that, it's a very gripping tale that soon has its hooks in you and you will find yourself going straight to the next book in the series.

3.0 out of 5 stars Average Sci Fi with nothing new to offer. 29 April 2013
By A.Alder
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I started reading the Sliding Void Trilogy as I've enjoyed Stephen Hunt's other books, the Jackelian books are amazing. However, this series lacks all of the depth of his other books. The character development is poor and a lot of the tech described in the book feels like its been borrowed from Ian M Banks Culture Novels.

The story (so far) is very generic and feels like its just Sci Fi by the numbers.

Hopefully books 2 & 3 will pick up a bit.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not the complete story 6 Jan 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is the first half of a book. It sets up the characters and the situation but very little in the way of action. It in fact stops half way through the action.(literally). If You include the second book you would have a complete novel. I would suggest the author combine the two and charge a reasonable price, otherwise I'm sure other people will feel a bit conned like myself.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting but Short 9 Dec 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
A good read that is potentially the start of a good series. My only complaint is that by the time the pace had ramped up to a point where something was going to happen the book was over. Far too short for the various plots the author is trying to bring into it.
