Product Description

Memoirs of a heavy drinker involved in the licensed trade for over twenty five years mainly based in the North East of England and Scotland.

Alcohol consumption is discussed in depth showing all its wart and attributes and how it affects lives and relationships.

You will wonder if you have ever had a drink problem and will look at today's binge drinkers in a different way. Are today's youth any different to there parents or grand parents?

Those who are nostalgic for good old fashioned drinking boozers going back to the 60's/70's and 80's when pubs were full of characters will enjoy this read.

The book is full of real life characters and some celebrities. There is alot of humour, drama, rape, fire, sex, suicide and violence.

The relationship between publicans/villains and policemen is discussed which shows that pub life in the 80's was more like "Life on Mars" that today's antiseptic, politically correct world.

Anyone who likes or has liked a drink or anyone who has worked in the licensed trade will find this book very interesting regardless of age.

There are approx 107,000 words and most people will be able to relate to the content not fined it a difficult read.

I bought this book thinking it maybe a interesting book. I was correct! This book has everything a book needs, suspense, action, humour, true life moments.
The book is very easy to read although does have some adult moments.
If you live in the UK and have been drinking in pubs then I highly recommend this book to them!

I was in two minds about this book as I'm under 30 and don't really remember anything much about the 80's!! But I am interested in binge drinking and the drink culture and this book came up.

I couldn't put the book down and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It's interesting to see that the binge drink culture really isn't that new!

This book takes you through a man's life from a young teenager to now, telling interesting things that have happened to him along the way. You meet several characters along the way as well as some famous names cropping up throughout the book.

A must for people who live in the Durham or Newcastle area as there is lots of references to several pubs and hotels in the area.

All in all a thoroughly good read and recommended.

As a Durham lass, who spent quite a lot of time socialising in the Durham/Newcastle area back in the day, this was a nostalgic trip back to the 70s and 80s. I have visited quite a few of the hotels, bars and pubs mentioned (though I was never a heavy drinker and even less so now) so thoroughly enjoyed this behind-the-scenes view of life back then from the other side of the bar. I even met the great BH (Durham Royal County Hotel)a few times - he was friendly with my husband.

There are some well-known north-eastern characters mentioned, some famous landmarks and a glimpse into the low-life that is just a few steps away from the regular clientele of even the most salubrious establishments.

Although I found the book nostalgic and entertaining I thought it was slightly too long, there was a dire lack of punctuation (especially apostrophes) and, towards the end, quite a lot of typos, which resulted in 4*s instead of the 5*s I would otherwise have given. A through edit will easily remedy this for later versions.

Overall, a cracking read, well-paced and well-written with some memorable characters, not least of which is the author.
