Product Description

Living with his soul mate Ricardo in an idyllic beach-house in Colombia, Mark looks like he has finally found true happiness. But all is not as it it seems. Despite the paradisiacal beaches and salsa music, Mark is torn between the quiet security of home and the excitement of his Colombian lifestyle. When an old friend's mother dies, Mark hopes that attending the funeral will enable him to decide where his future lies. But no sooner does Mark set foot in England than bonds of love and obligation from the past begin to envelop him with such force that he wonders not only if his relationship with Ricardo will survive, but if he will ever be able be break free again... Insightful, poignant, pierced by Nick Alexander's trademark wry humour and forensic eye for detail, Sleight of Hand weaves universal themes of honesty and happiness, desire and obligation, love and lust into a rich tapestry of modern life.

I thought I'd save my review until the last(?) book in the 50 Reasons series, as too much gushing is bad for the soul!

I'm not a young, single, gay man. I'm an old, married, straight woman so I suppose I'm not really the target audience for Nick Alexander's books but I didn't let that put me off and I'm so glad I didn't.

Watching Mark's struggles to find Mr Right, through many Mr Nowhere Near Rights, several Mr All Right For Nows and a couple of Mr So Close to Rights really does take you on that overused phrase - a rollercoaster of emotion.

Nick Alexander's writing is faultless - the stories are utterly engaging. I really didn't want to put the books down and for at least 3 of the books I stayed up reading all night just to get to the end and find out what happened to Mark, because I actually cared about him. I laughed and cried with him through his jealousies and insecurities, through his hopefulness and hopelessness and through the love, sex, disappointment and happiness.

You will care about the characters. You will love the writing. If you're at all squeamish about gay sex, which I'm not, there may be a few places you'll want to skip over but you must read these stories.

And now I'm off to read Nick Alexander's other books....

I've just finished the last of this five-part series. They are all, without exception, wonderfully written with an engaging storyline, so wonderfully described you are there with the characters and, if I may play with the English language a little, it is absolutely un-put-downable.

I recommend you read the series in order, or buy the compendium book which has all of them together, but I guess any one of them would make a good read on their own.

The wonderful thing about Nick's writing is that, in your mind's eye, you know every inch of that flat, that beach, that whatever and you can follow the characters around it with ease. And just as you think you've worked out the next twist of the storyline, you discover you are wrong and Nick takes you off down a different route. An enforced break, where my real-life took over and I had to put the book to one side for a few days, convinced me I was hooked - I'd suddenly find myself wondering what was happening to Mark, Ricardo, Jenny or Sarah and couldn't wait to be able to pick up where I'd left off.

I'm not a softy really but I have to say I shed a tear or two toward the end - but you'll need to read it to find if it was from sadness or joy. What a pity there are only the five in this series, I could just start another one.

PS. Sorry if I overdid the word 'wonderful' but they really are.

Once again, Nick Alexander takes us into Mark's world. From the first page I found it hard to put the Kindle down and, in the end, only external factors such as a need to sleep or eat interrupted what was otherwise a rollercoaster ride through the emotions of Mark and those who surround him. For the first time, and put to exceedingly good use, we get to see through the eyes of other characters in this rich tapestry of life.

Nick himself said "there's only one job where making people cry is considered a plus." and he's not wrong. Sleight of Hand wrings tears both of pain and of joy from the reader as events unfold and I for one am grateful for each and every drop. If you like stories which encourage you to deeply invest in the characters then the 50 Reasons series is for you, and Sleight of Hand definitely lives up to the task.

Shame about the end
