Book Description

Book 1 in the best-selling Bite Back series

"Vampires are the flickering illusions of Hollywood. They don't exist. We do. We are the Athanate."

For Amber Farrell, post-military life as a PI has its ups and downs: She's been hit by a truck. She's being sued by a client. Denver's newest drug lord just put out a contract on her. The sinister Athanate want her to come in for a friendly chat. And it's only Tuesday.

Enter Jennifer Kingslund: rich, gorgeous - a tough businesswoman who's known for getting what she wants in the boardroom and the bedroom. Someone's trying to sabotage her new resort and destroy her company - and she wants Amber to find out who.

The answers lead Amber past Were and Adept, right back to the Athanate - and a centuries-old war that could threaten not just Denver, but the nation that Amber swore to protect and serve.

And all sides want to claim her for their own...

About the Author

Mark Henwick was born in Africa and left out in the sun too often. An early interest in philosophy and psychology was adequately exorcised by tending bars. And while trying to enroll in a class to read Science Fiction full time, he ended up taking an engineering degree which splendidly qualified him to move into marketing. That in turn spawned a late onset career in creative writing. When not working, he gets high by the slightly less conventional means of a small light aircraft, or down and dirty on a mountain bike.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ready for the next novel in this great series! 25 Oct. 2012
Format:Paperback
I picked up Sleight of Hand unsure how good it was going to be. It's been really hit and miss lately with UF novels, leaving me skeptical of any new ones that have come along. Reading this one was kind of like trying a new desert of which you had no idea of the ingredients. You take that first bit and think "Okay, this isn't bad". Another tentative bite and you're beginning to believe the baker might be on to something. More bites and suddenly the desert is gone and you're wildly looking around for more. Damn, the baker (or in this case author) only gave you one piece. How in the heck are you supposed to live with that? It might have filled you up and left you satisfied, but we all know one is never enough, especially if you're a glutton for good reads. That's exactly how my experience with this novel went.

In the beginning, you are introduced to Amber Farrell. She's an Army veteran, former cop, and now struggling PI. Yep, this girl's gotten around. Makes for an interesting combination of skills to bring to the table for her customers, if only more would come along and hire her. After her latest job doesn't go so well, she's in trouble and needs some income coming in fast. Lucky for her, Jennifer Kingslund, a highly successful businesswoman, arrives with a lucrative case that's just what Amber needs, even if it does sound a bit dangerous--not that that would stop her. It doesn't take long before Amber is neck-deep in Denver politics and crime, managing to piss off a few powerful people that aren't above getting rid of one annoying little private investigator. Let's not forget she's drawn the attention of the local vampires and weres too (just for good measure).

Also for fans of Karen Marie Moning's Fever series or Devon Monk's Allie Beckstrom series

I read a lot of vampire/paranormal books and most are tired repetitions of the same old tropes. It was a welcome relief to meet Amber Farrell one kick-ass heroine who has issues with her issues but remains funny and clever throughout.

The first thing I did after finishing this was look to see if Mark Henwick had written anything else - I liked it that much. Considering the trash that you can often pay good money for I thought this was worth WAAAAY more than the £1.96 I paid for it.

If you like a plot, good dialogue and supernatural elements all with (as far as I could tell) flawless punctuation and spelling/grammar then look no further.

3.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable read. 3 Jan. 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Possible spoilers in this reviews.
A different take on the usual vampire genre. I liked the heroine's back story, ex military, ex police officer. The vampires I'm not sure about, they are not traditional vampires except in the sense of needing blood but their characterisation was plausible. The main difficulty I found in this book was the romance element. There were 2 different romantic interests, the female/female one was well sign posted but for me they went from client/P.I. to close friends to almost lovers very quickly. The other seemed to be thrown in there because it was expected.
Another minor niggle was the assistant's spirit guide. A wolf or eagle aren't good enough for this girl, no she has to get a ******.
This first book I hope is merely a scene setter, it raised more questions that it answered. I will buy the second book to see if answers any of the questions.

5.0 out of 5 stars Where is star number 6? 8 Dec. 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Like most other reviewers I was at first quite sceptical about a new author especially with a female on the cover. Thoughts of a chick romance in the likes of 50 Shades of Vampire came to mind, and books about New Orleans etc. I have a strong dislike of overly descriptive personal physical interaction between the characters – it is not needed when the story grabs you by the throat and will not let go. On this occasion guard your throat!

Sleight of Hand as a first novel does not have any of the descriptive encounters that I dislike; in fact there is a hint of thinking two ways which is where it should stay – a hint.

All in all it is a story of humour, frustration at things not going the way they should, relationships between the characters can only become stronger and a good tale to boot.

When will the next book be released as there is no way that this should be allowed to be a one book journey?

This is up there with the best and therefore better than the rest.

Buy and be hooked. Have patience for the next instalment.

3.0 out of 5 stars Slow start but it got better.. 11 Feb. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I found this book a little hard to get into at first (not sure why, it just didn't grab me) but it picked up fast and by the end I was ready to buy the next one. It's not wildly original but, overall, it's quite readable.

Thoroughly enjoyable read. If you love Ilona Andrews type urban fantasy you'll love this! Very likeable characters, good plot and well written. Also an absolute bargain for the Kindle edition. Will definitely be continuing with this series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great first in a series 24 May 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I really really enjoyed this book. Amber is a great character and I loved the fact that she had been in the army, it really backed up her training and way of handling herself. She has a lot to handle in the space of about a week, after skirting on the edge of the supernatural for 2 years she is now flung into it headlong with more than 1 species getting involved much to her shock in some cases. As a PI she gets in over her head on this case, or multiple cases which all seem to link, and has to rely on other people a lot. I liked the supporting cast and I look forward to getting to know them better and I'm very curious about the supernatural world. I think the involvement of the army is something very believable and I am look forward to seeing that play out too.

The particulars of this one mystery were solved but it opened quite a few other doors and I see much drama to come from the 2 different factions of the Athanate. One story thread I am particularly anxious to see more of is David. In fact it all neatly moves me into anticipating the next in the series. This is definitely a well above par first in a new series and I am going to go and buy the next right now!
