Crunching, munching cows; croaking frogs; tweeting birds; miaowing cats; barking dogs--all these are hazards Sophie must try to avoid if she is finally to rest her head.
But when the solution does arise, Charlotte Woodchuck is equally annoyed by Sophie's loud, sonorous snoring.
Somewhat American in feel, this charming story is a little let down by fairly monochromatic illustrations, but the onomatopoeic animal noises interrupting Sophie's (and Charlotte's!) sleep will give little minds plenty to focus on and imitate. And the inability to find a quiet place to sleep will hit home not only with little people, but also with their parents.
A nice bedtime story for youngsters aged up to 5. --Lucie Naylor
