5.0 out of 5 stars A stunning retrospective and reinterpretation 29 Jan 2004
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
A few years ago, Dutch rockers The Gathering decided to sever their links with the Century Media label. The popular view on this decision is that CM were trying to tie the band to their previous gothic/atmospheric metal style, while the band members themselves wanted to progress in other directions. As a consequence, the band spent over two years writing and producing their 2003 album Souvenirs, which was released on their own new label, Psychonaut Records, and was markedly different in style from what had gone before. But that wasn't to be the end of the story.
Century Media wanted another album, and so the band eventually had to settle this dispute by producing something else. But what was it to be? After all, they presumably didn't want to write new songs in their old style. In the event, they came up with a clever solution: semi-acoustic reworkings of some of their older material. And so it was that they got to work on a batch of songs, most of which are well known to most TG fans, but they chose to include three older songs that go right back to the band's death metal roots, and that predate singer Anneke van Giersbergen. The title song, on the other hand, is new.
In November 2003, the band held two special concerts in the LUX theatre in Nijmegen, Holland, on consecutive evenings. Sleepy Buildings is the outcome. This would be an emotionally charged occasion for the band, because bassist Hugo Prinsen Geerligs had recently announced his intention to leave. These would be his last two performances.
The result is a stunning and classic collection of powerful, emotional songs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Breathtakingly nice 8 Feb 2004
By Gryph
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I was familiar with some of The Gatherings work before I considered purchasing 'Sleepy Buildings', and so fueled by a fiancee despairing of Morbid Angel, Carcass, and Cannibal Corpse, decided to go ahead and add it to 'Your Basket'. I wasn't disappointed by it one bit. Showcasing fourteen of the bands classic songs from their decade plus career, this is a semi acoustic, seated performance in their home country The Netherlands, which at times is utterly awesome in its scope and atmosphere.
Vocalist Anneke's voice is strong throughout, and occasionally surpasses her studio work in at least its emotional strength, with the only weakness perhaps being during 'Shrink', which is without the haunting harmonies evident on the studio original.
For some unknown reason however, this group, who outclass their most similar mainstream imitators, Evanescence, by a league, have failed to make much impact in the UK. On the continent and in the US however, they are performing very well, for what are still essentially an underground band.
It is my aim to get more people in the UK to discover this band. They would appeal to both metalheads, more mainstream rock fans, and anyone who admires beautiful, remarkable music. If more people in the UK buy this, then maybe The Gathering would then see fit to play some UK dates in their next tour, then we could all have a good sit down to their music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quick Reviews! 2 Dec 2009
By carlosnightman VINE VOICE
Format:Audio CD
Sleepy Buildings came as a between albums surprise for fans and remains the best present the band has given us. It ranks highly in my opinion with the best live albums ever- it has all the trademarks of a classic live recording- passion, fan favorites, inspired performances, the odd mistake which add to the overall gig. This was a semi-acoustic show for fans at the Lux Theatre in 2003 with a couple of bonus songs from their British live shows. I was lucky enough to see them at Glastonbury and while that was a much livelier show the acoustic nature of this show means everything is more mellow, more laidback, and more personal. The small crowd gives a sense of intimacy and the songs chosen vary wildly from their respective original versions. Some of these new takes feel at times better than the way they are usually performed but naturally that is subjective. This is a must for fans and I would strongly encourage anyone remotely interested in the band or anyone who wants to try something new to invest in this; you won't be disappointed.

`Locked Away' opens the album softly just Anneke's voice and some background acoustic guitar. Pianos and tambourine soon follow giving this a much different feel to what we are used to. This sets the tone for the whole show- everything is subtle and underplayed quite amazing considering how complex some of the originals are. The irony is that while those originals were so ambitious, it was equally ambitious trying to strip them down. And for anyone wondering, Anneke sounds even better live than on record.

`Saturnine' is taken from `If Then Else' a highly melodic and at times bitter song, here featuring some fantastic bass and stunning vocals.

4.0 out of 5 stars Almost Acoustic Live Album, But Not Quite 23 Mar 2004
By Dr. D. B. Sillars VINE VOICE
Format:Audio CD
This is not an unplugged album by any stretch of the imagination. The Gathering have been taking a more experimental approach to their songwriting recently and this is ably demonstrated by this live recording. The arrangemets are very atmospheric, with layers of very effective keyboard and guitar treatments to enrich the subtle performances. A lot of early material is suitably re-worked for this live setting. The production is very detailed, with Annekes' voice very assured and strong throughout. This is a very impressive live recording.

3.0 out of 5 stars the mellower side 15 Oct 2009

While I prefer the harder edge of The Gathering this is still a fine release but quite a bit mellow as the title suggests, can make you ' sleepy'
