In SLEEPLESS by Cyn Balog, the Sandman is not just a childhood fantasy - he, or she, is real!
Eron De Marchelle is a Sandman and his job is to protect his charges and help them get a good night's sleep. And he isn't supposed to favor one over another or become involved in their dreams. But ever since she was a little girl, Eron has been attracted to Julia. And he has to watch as her world crashes around her when her boyfriend, Griffin, is suddenly killed. Will Eron break the rules and become involved with one of his charges, or just sit by and watch?
The premise of this story is definitely new. A Sandman? I've never read anything of the like. (And where is mine? I always have a hard time falling asleep and wake up at least once an hour - so my Sandman must not be doing his/her job!) Anyway, when I saw what the story was about, I knew I had to read it.
The storyline was good and the plot was well thought out, but I didn't really like the characters. I definitely didn't like Griffin or Brett. Sorry, but they just seemed like jerks to me. Guys who laugh at anything, and Griffin and Julia never had serious conversations. I don't know; just not very likeable guys. And while I didn't dislike Julia, I didn't really care for her either, until the very end. Then she seemed to get some of her own personality. Eron was cute. The way that he was so confused in the modern world was endearing.
I liked how the story was told from alternating viewpoints between Julia and Eron. And I liked the overall plot. But I think the ending wrapped up a little too nicely and quickly. I could easily have read more and would have liked there to be more story at the end. Still a 5 star read, though.
This was a fun book on a new topic, and I look forward to reading Cyn Balog's other book, FAIRY TALE.

The Sandman becomes everyone's next "Edward"

This is a fantastic new book coming from the author who brought young adults, Fairy Tale. Not only is this new story even more imaginative, but the characters will most definitely become "heartthrobs" for all teenage girls.
The story begins with Julia. Julia is a girl who...well...let's just say she is extremely tough. A long time ago, when she was seven, something happened to Julia to land her on the front-page of the local newspaper, and ever since then people have stared at her a bit differently over the years. She made two friends in high school. One was someone just as hard and tough as she'd become - a very sarcastic young man named Griffin. Griffin is always telling jokes and usually makes people angry because he "calls them as he sees them," and he and Julia make a great pair. One night, as he's going home from Julia's house, Griffin suddenly sees an image take shape nearby - a woman with black, emotionless eyes like that of a shark.
The next morning a phone call comes to Julia, and she could swear it is her boyfriend once again making a joke. Because of this mistaken identity, Julia says some things she shouldn't, and ends up on the front-page once again. Turns out that Griffin has passed away and Julia can't believe it. Now, is this a sad, sympathetic story? Not really. Griffin has gone somewhere else, to take over the job that a boy by the name of Eron has been doing for the last one hundred years. Eron is a sleepbringer - better known as the Sandman. There are many sleepbringers who take care of their charges and "seduce" them to sleep with words and the magical sand that they carry. Julia has been one of Eron's charges for a long time, so Griffin will inherit Julia when Eron goes back down to Earth to live again.
Griffin is more than a bit upset about Julia not being able to talk and see him when she's awake. More than anything, he wants to tell her that his best friend - who is now trying t date Julia - is not a good guy, and Griffin wants to save her from a big mistake.
While Griffin is messing up his new job, big time, Eron is trying his best to "settle" back in to the real world. He can't deny that he, himself, has had a crush on Julia for a long time - as he's been the one watching over her and protecting her from the evils that appear in her life. There is certainly a part of him that would very much like to get "closer" to Julia when his duty is up and he's sent back to live like a normal human being. But Eron isn't quite as ready as he thinks he is. The world has changed a great deal since he last walked it, and everything from technology, to language, to the un-gentlemanly way boys behave, has him more than a little thrown. Humans and Sandmen can communicate...but only through dreams, so Eron has to find a way to warn Julia about some strange happenings, and at the same time keep Griffin in line so he doesn't screw up the job and become banished to The Last Place.
This story is certainly unique, and the romance is beautifully imagined and told. I would safely assume that all dreamy teen readers will be clutching this one in their hands, and wishing for a mighty, heroic Eros of their very own.

"Mr. Sandman bring me a dream....."

"Mr. Sandman, bring me a dream..." Well, at least bring me a guy like Eron. While I wasn't fond of the name I had to keep in mind that he was over hundred years old so the name makes sense for his time. He is unlike most guys today but how we would like them to be; holding doors open, has a gentle touch, extremely polite and hard working.
Sleepless was almost like three stories woven together through two points of view. Julia's boyfriend dies so through the story she is dealing with his death and what the future may hold. Eron is her sandman but his time is almost up. All he has to do is train a new sandman and then he can go back to being human. So, while you get two stories and how they coincide from Julia and Eron you kind of get a third from Eron and talking about the new sandman and remembering when he was new and learning what the new sandman must be going through in his transition.
The ending was sweet, happy and one of those aww moments. But it almost wasn't. I started to get teary eyed in the next to last chapter and I kept reading thinking, "It is not ending this way. It can't."
This was easy read. It flowed pretty well. I haven't read many books with more than one view point but I kind of liked it. Each chapter was labeled with a name so it made it easy to follow.

Mr. Sandman we're sending you back to life... maybe

I'm so torn about what to rate this one. It's either a three or a four. I went into it really hoping it was a five and the concept IS a five. We all have our own Sandmen (or Sandwomen) who watch over us and make sure that when it is time for us to catch some zzz's that we get them. Upon his death, Enron was chosen to become one, in return for this he'd be allowed to return to human life after one hundred years of duty. He's fallen for one of his charges, Julia. As the time nears for him to become a human he faces many choices, most of which involve breaking the Sandman rules, in order to protect Julia. These choices could put her at risk. They could put him at risk - both his human life as well as his Sandman "life".
That probably makes it sound a lot more exciting than it is. There are parts that are really well done. But there are also some characters that just seem to almost have multiple personality disorder. There are parts that don't seem to fit in with the rest of the book tone wise. So in the end I suppose I must give it the three stars. It's a fast read. It's good, but not great. If only she would have expanded on this a little more or gone in that direction there, etc it would have been so much better. I could see this having become a potential series even. Something is just a little off.
