Product Description

Synopsis

If you thought you were of the wrong gender, age, IQ level or social class to develop an eating disorder, I urge you to read my story. Other people see me as Alison the businesswoman, wife, mother, daughter - whatever hat I happen to be wearing. To the outside world I probably appear to be totally in control. But appearances can be deceptive. One in four adults will suffer at some time from a mental illness. I am one of those statistics. When I was 40 I became ill with an eating disorder, which took on many guises until I had it under control. Today, most people wouldn't realise that I had ever had a problem. What they don't see is my daily struggle, and the awareness that I could relapse at any time. This is a true account of what it is like to suffer from an eating disorder. In writing my story I have, in many ways, exposed myself at my most vulnerable. My only purpose in doing so is to try and save another person from picking up the one-way ticket to hell that I have travelled on.

5.0 out of 5 stars Alison speaking out, 7 Dec 2006
By Sam "Sam" (England) - See all my reviews
I sat and listened to Alison's life journey, in ore of her honesty and bravery to expose her dragons and the impact this had on her life. I feel Alison is a remarkable women and has great strengths to continue to survive. I'm sure this book will be as remarkable as it was to listen to her. In my opion the first negative remark should not be taken into account as I feel this lady may have had an influence on Alison's journey. Well worth a read...........

2.0 out of 5 stars Dragons, poppy seeds, don't bother, 27 Sep 2006

This is a short book (99 pages)which is probably a good thing. It is not particularly well written and actually tells the reader very little about how it feels to be living with an eating disorder. It feels quite disorganised and hard to follow. There is little consideration for the author's family - admittedly a common effect of anorexia - and a great deal of self-pity from an author who clearly also has a problem getting on with her neighbours. There is a distinct air of vanity publishing about this uninspiring book. And who is Caroline Merz, a ghost writer or part-author?
Save your money for something more worthwhile.

1.0 out of 5 stars Just badly written, 31 May 2007
By L. Draper "twtltrtd" (UK) - See all my reviews

Aside from being an inconsistent, slapdash, dull read, this is also probably the most poorly written book I've ever read. Alden isn't a writer- she's a working class mother from Yarmouth, and it shows in her book. I have no idea why she felt compelled to write her fairly unremarkable story; she states that her intent is to 'try and save another person from picking up the one-way ticket to hell that I have travelled on'- in truth, it seems more like a lackluster bid for her five minutes of fame than anything else.
