Product Description

Sleeping Dogs is a gritty and visceral open-world cop drama set in the vibrant city of Hong Kong.

Sleeping Dogs catapults players into the role of undercover cop Wei Shen, tasked with taking down one of the world’s most fearsome criminal organisations from the inside... the Hong Kong Triads. As players explore the bustling and crowded Hong Kong island, through its neon-lit side streets and sprawling street markets, an incredible story unfolds of loyalty and betrayal, where Wei begins to question his own motives as he is sucked in deeper than he could ever imagine.

Offering players an island packed with action, every street corner, market stall, harbour dock or city skyscraper can become an opportunity for intense shoot-outs, adrenaline-fuelled street races and intense, brutal martial arts combat. Featuring one of the most intuitive and imaginative combat systems, Sleeping Dogs empowers players to perform an extensive set of martial arts moves, singlehandedly taking on numerous opponents. Players perform bone-crunching kicks and combos, vicious counters and a cinematic set of environmental takedowns making use of countless real-world items from circular saws to phone booths, incinerators to refrigerator doors.

4.0 out of 5 stars John Woo + GTA + Yakuza/Shenmue = Sleeping Dogs 18 Sep 2012
By Craig Lam TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Platform for Display:PC|Edition:Limited Edition
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
Good:
-The best thing about Sleeping Dogs is probably the setting. Hong Kong is a vibrant place with a fascinating mix of architecture and it's fantastic to see a developer take a chance on creating an open world game that doesn't take place in the US. It's nice to drive on the left hand side of the road, for once! Not only that, but Hong Kong holds a massive cachet of nostalgia for me: I loved watching the old action flicks set there and, as I played the game, I kept catching glimpses of scenes that seemed familiar. Neon lit puddles, bustling markets, breaking glass.

-A smooth, attractive graphics engine to bring the city to life. I don't recall Sleeping Dogs ever stuttering, even during action-heavy sequences.

-I love the de-emphasis of guns and the prominence of hand to hand fighting. The melee system borrows heavily from the Batman games, yet it does enough different and feels good enough to feel like more than a simple rip-off. The environmental attacks are brilliant and add variety to the fights, too.

Mediocre:
-The facial animations are rather wooden compared to the competition, though they're decent enough to convey what the characters are trying to emote.

Bad:
-The ending does seem rushed. I'm guessing this was probably due to budgetary constraints.

4.0 out of 5 stars It's GTA++ 29 Aug 2012

Fun: 4.0 out of 5 stars
I didn't know anything about this game a couple of weeks ago and assumed it would be rubbish, but took a chance as it was a reasonable price, and I'm very glad I did. As others have said, it's a GTA clone with added Batman style combat. Street races, ramps for car/bike jumps, side missions, cop chases, etc, it's pretty much all there. I think the only things missing were the helicopters and planes. That said, I enjoyed it more than the last GTA. Plus, you get to drive on the left, which makes a nice change.

It's a little buggy. It's crashed on me a few times, sometimes my character starts sprinting for no reason, and occasionally it doesn't understand when I'm trying to hire a taxi, rather than steal it, which is annoying. Also when you're trying to take cover, it can be a little picky about which way you're facing, or if you're an inch or two out of position.

But that's all pretty minor stuff. In the end, the game is fun, and if you do all the side missions, it lasts a pretty long time. If I have one major(ish) complaint, it's that it's a little too easy, which is why I've marked it down a star. If I have to find a way into a building, I'd rather try to work it out myself than be told 'move here, wipe your nose, then move here', etc. I rarely died or found it challenging, unless I was trying to defeat 20 thugs at once early on in the game, or trying to win a race in a rubbish car. That might affect it's replayability for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great fun 6 Sep 2012

Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
Once I updated my graphics driver, the game played without any issues. Adding the high res DX11 pack before playing made this game look beautiful. The environments are atmospheric to the point that I set aside my missions and went for a walk in rainy downtown HongKong. My only complaint about the city environment is that it's not interactive enough. All shops and buildings should be accessable to a point and all people should react when you talk to them rather than behave as if you are not there.
The combat is fantastic; the driving is good and vehicles feel and sound throaty. Different vehicles feel and handle noticeably differently although driving could be tweaked so the vehicles do not feel like they're glued to the road when cornering.
Cut scenes are great, voice acting is good and the story is interesting. Preferred it to GTA.

Sleeping Dogs' first impression is a deterrent for anyone who doesn't want a Grand Theft Auto style game, as it's portrayed very much in that manner: you're a gang member, fight rival gangs, you can steal any vehicle you like, the plot's about inter-gang warfare & criminal life...etc. However one viewing of the trailer, and I performed a 180 so fast that even I had whiplash. It was immediately clear that this is actually all about the lead character's own Story, as a damaged undercover cop trying to exorcise his family issues and get promoted by engaging in a terrifyingly dangerous mission - all told with a gorgeous visual flair and style reminiscent of Deus Ex: Human Revolution.
The game itself doesn't disappoint either. Hong Kong is very big, and the gaming sections of the island are free-roaming, distinct, and often a very beautiful maze of rain slicked or sun-drenched neon. In terms of the transport, the game spoils you with a wide array of cars and bikes visually based on real vehicles, some zippy (but annoyingly hard to control) motorbikes, trucks, speedboats, yachts (seriously), junk-style trading vessels...happily, if you don't feel like spending 5 minutes traversing the map via motorway, you can just get in a cab, set a destination, and be there in about 20 seconds.
The similarities to other series continue with a well implemented option to control your clothing style and buy items from shops, and outfits often imbue a gentle boost to combat prowess or street cred, affecting how well you progress. (A wide assortment of DLC add on packs also help with this and add fun window dressing, including the 'Monkey' '70s TV series pack which gives you an amusing motorbike with a simulated glowing cloud).
